1. Call of duty

Call of duty

  • Platforms: PC, XBOX 360, PS3, mobile
  • Release date: 2003
  • Developer: Activision

It was from this part that one of the longest-running and best-selling shooter series started. Gamers are invited to take on the role of several characters and take part in the most iconic battles of World War II - the famous crossing on the Volga, the Allied landing in Normandy, many sabotage operations in Western Europe, etc., as well as fight against other players in fierce multiplayer battles, including classic deathmatch modes (every man for himself), capture the flag and team battle especially beloved by fans.

The game has some similarities with its predecessor Medal of Honor series, which is not surprising, since most of the staff working on the new project also worked on the Medal. Only now the action is staged even more like Hollywood - a shooting range with a lot of computer dummies is diluted with spectacular explosions, car chases, anti-aircraft guns and silent sniper elimination of enemies. The creators of Call of Duty have proven that Quake III's aging engine is still capable of delivering beautiful visuals. If you manually edit the settings file, setting a high resolution, even now, in 2020, the product looks quite playable.

2. Call of Duty: United Offensive

Call of Duty: United Offensive

  • Platforms: PC (Windows)
  • Release date: September 2004
  • Developer: Gray Matter Studio

A small standalone addon, naturally released on the wave of popularity of the first part. Contains a new storyline campaign that allows you to take part in the actual hostilities during WWII on the side of the American, British and Soviet armies. The Battle of Stalingrad, the Ardennes Forest, Prokhorovka and many other well-known locations of the battles, players will visit for more than a dozen missions. Although they are not united by a common plotline, they still manage to look like cinematic scenes from some “Saving Private Ryan".

With all the desire, United Offensive can hardly be called just a set of missions riveted on the knee. There are many improvements over the original - improved quality of special effects (smoke, fire, explosions, etc.), many new types of weapons that can be used in singleplayer and multiplayer battles, several original action scenes. For example, during one of the missions you will have to shoot enemy planes while running around the cabin and eliminating damage to your flying vehicle.

3. Call of duty 2

Call of duty 2

  • Platforms: PC, XBOX 360
  • Released: October 25, 2005
  • Developer: Infinity Ward

The official second part, still exploiting the theme of WWII and military operations against Germany. As before, we will have to take control of American, British and Russian soldiers from time to time - even some missions will take place in the same locations as the events of the original with an addition to it. Of course, more exotic regions, like Algeria, have been added, but quite a bit of time is devoted to them. The English campaign turned out the best - the somewhat boring sabotage from the first Call of Duty was replaced by an epic action game in the spirit of the adventures of agent 007: the passage of a squad through a minefield, tank chases, etc.

The gameplay of the game has undergone significant changes. Since the series has taken a course on console gaming as a priority, the creators decided to abandon such an element familiar to all fans of shooters as collecting first-aid kits to replenish the health scale. Now it is enough just to sit for a while in cover for the damage to miraculously heal, making it possible to rush into battle again. As for the rest, the classical formula has remained unchanged - only the graphical component and the physics of objects have been adjusted to modern criteria.

4. Call of duty 3

Call of duty 3

  • Platforms: PS2, PS3, XBOX, XBOX 360, Wii
  • Release date: November 7, 2006
  • Developer: Treyarch

The next release of Call of Duty, this time bypassing PC and released exclusively for consoles of the generations that were relevant at that time. The developers did their best and squeezed the maximum out of the hardware resources of the consoles, providing the game with additional graphical bells and whistles such as dynamic smoke from explosions and more realistic hand-to-hand combat. As for the single-player mode, it still consists of combat missions on the fields of the famous battles of World War II. Shoot, drive a tank, and shoot again. Now it can even be done in co-op (network or on the same console, in split screen mode).

The multiplayer component differs depending on the generation of consoles - on PS2 and XBOX it is limited to 16 players, versions for Xbox 360 and PS3 not only give the best picture, but also allow you to arrange massive shootings for 24 people. Characters in a multiplayer game are divided into classes that differ in their characteristics. For example, an orderly has less lethal potential in terms of shooting, but runs faster and fights well in hand to hand combat.

5. Call of Duty: Roads to Victory

Call of Duty: Roads to Victory

  • Platforms: Sony PSP
  • Release date: March 13, 2007
  • Developer: Amaze Entertainment
An offshoot of the series, released exclusively for the Sony PSP portable console. Now you can fight like grandfathers in due time even on a tram, even at school under a desk. The control, which is qualitatively adapted for a small portable device, has this position, plus the built-in auto-aiming of the sight helps, which greatly simplifies firing. Graphics and sound are among the best in the entire line of projects released on the PSP.

The plot consists of fourteen missions, divided into three campaigns - for the Americans, Canadians and British. Moreover, the variety of activities is not inferior to the parts released on the older platforms. Here there is defense, and offensive operations, and the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of equipment or stationary weapons. There is even multiplayer, although it is very limited in the number of players involved (maximum 6 people).

6. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

  • Platforms: PC, PS3, XBOX 360, Nintendo DS, Wii
  • Released: November 5, 2007
  • Developer: Infinity Ward
Making historical shooters about World War II, sooner or later you can face a crisis of ideas, and the audience will simply get tired of doing the same thing over and over again. Therefore, Activision decided to launch a new sub-series, telling about a fictitious confrontation between the brave American and British military against Islamic terrorists with their Russian friends. Already from the description it is clear that such a plot cannot bear any realism and semantic load. But this is not what Modern Warfare is good for - it takes it with its spectacular gameplay and constantly changing situations. Now you are storming a ship sailing in the sea as part of the SAS team, and a couple of hours later, in a camouflage suit, you lie with a sniper rifle, trying to eliminate an important target in Pripyat.

The multiplayer modes have been significantly improved, offering players a completely new experience. Now the matter is not limited to only one shooting. Gamers have the opportunity to use a variety of gadgets, pump levels, unlock new attachments for weapons and customize their appearance, use rewards for a series of murders, for example, launching a targeted carpet bombing of a specified area or an unmanned aerial vehicle that illuminates enemy targets on the radar for some time.

7. Call of Duty: World at War

Call of Duty: World at War

  • Platforms: PC, PS2, PS3, XBOX 360, Nintendo DS
  • Released: November 11, 2007
  • Developer: Treyarch
Forgetting about the already annoying WWII theme was not an easy task for the creators of the Call of Duty series. Once again, an attempt was made to return to the origins, but with new mechanics tested in Modern Warfare. And we cannot say that the developers did not succeed - everything turned out really great. On the new engine, capable of producing a cinematic picture for those times, the landing in Normandy, Omaha Beach and other events in which fans of the series had already taken part in virtual spaces began to look different in a good sense of the word. Plus, story missions were added on the Pacific front (the confrontation between the United States and Japan).

Multiplayer turned out to be not much different from the network game in the previous part of the series, only the weapons and awards for the series of murders were adapted to the realities of those years, but for the first time in the history of the series a completely new cooperative mode was included - Zombies. In it, four players must fight off the gradually growing waves of the living dead, simultaneously opening new areas of the map and buying weapons for the money earned during the rounds.

8. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2

  • Platforms: PC, PS3, XBOX 360
  • Released: November 10, 2009
  • Developer: Infinity Ward

The second part of the mini-series taking place in an alternative reality to the modern world. With the elimination of the Chechen terrorist Zakhaev, the conflict situation was not resolved, but on the contrary worsened, because an even more dangerous and calculating Vladimir Makarov came to power in Russia, who did not hesitate to use nuclear weapons and terrorize innocent people around the world, creating the preconditions for the beginning of the Third world war. To prevent global confrontation, fighters of the most elite American special forces, as well as the regular army, were used. In the course of the story, players will have to control five different characters, whose storylines will often intersect.

The campaign in Modern Warfare 2 is spectacular, cinematic, but ends very quickly, causing fans to ask for more. Therefore, a special operation mode was added to the game for single and joint passage. In some, you need to quietly eliminate opponents, making your way to some object, in others - to fight off waves of enemies growing in strength on a fortified base, etc. The multiplayer, which has already become a hallmark of COD, has reached its peak, according to the statements of many players: pumping system, excellent balance and a sea of possibilities to create a unique fighter.

9. Call of Duty: Black Ops

Call of Duty: Black Ops

  • Platforms: PC, PS3, XBOX 360, XBOX One, Nintendo DS
  • Released: November 9, 2010
  • Developer: Treyarch
Treyarch looked at the successes of their colleagues at Infinity Ward and decided to gradually switch from historical stories to fictional alternate realities. And they did it even better. The Black Ops campaign is a dashing blockbuster set during the Cold War between the western world and the Soviet Union. Secret conspiracies, government organizations and espionage missions behind enemy lines are also attached, as well as some digressions, telling about the events in Vietnam and the USSR in the post-war period. All events are connected by a single plot, capable of surprising with non-standard plot twists and an unexpected denouement.

After completing the passage, you can safely go to the zombie mode with your own story, designed for team play (4 people are recommended). Online battles have acquired new weapons, gadgets - for example, radio-controlled cars with explosives that can be rolled right at the feet of opponents. Some "goodies" are bought for the internal virtual currency, which in some modes can now be bet. Become one of the top three - get a cash bonus.

10. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 3

  • Platforms: PC, PS3, XBOX 360
  • Released: November 8, 2011
  • Developer: Infinity Ward
Completion of the story of Captain Price and other beloved Modern Warfare characters. Despite all the efforts made, the global conflict could not be stopped and Russian submarines launched a large-scale attack on New York. Throughout the entire story campaign, players will have to carry out sabotage missions, participate in major battles and weaken opponents in every possible way, disabling objects that are significant to them in different parts of the globe, in order to effectively punish the main villain at the end and, with a sense of accomplishment, go into multiplayer battles.

But not everything is as cool as it seems at first glance. The players began to express quite natural dissatisfaction - they say, the new part did not bring absolutely anything new within the framework of the series, and indeed, it is marking time. If earlier everyone praised the staged scripted scenes for their entertainment, now they began to irritate fans of the franchise rather. There was a need to add more freedom of action.

11. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

  • Platforms: PC, PS3, XBOX 360, XBOX One, Wii U
  • Released: November 12, 2012
  • Developer: Treyarch
The anticipated sequel Black Ops, in which the developers decided on a bold experiment, for the first time in the series testing the theme of the future. Events now unfold both during the Cold War and in 2025. As part of the global storyline, players will have a chance to try out both real-life weapon models from the past and high-tech novelties from the future - drones equipped with machine guns, walking combat robots, advanced thermal imagers and much more. It is especially interesting to manage all of the above in multiplayer, as this opens up many new ways to effectively eliminate enemies.

And the list of innovations does not end there - nonlinearity has also been added to the game, allowing the player to influence some elements of the plot with his actions, and a strategic component. In some missions, there is a switch to strategic mode, the organization of base defense and a number of other interesting decisions. The duration of the game has increased markedly - it is unlikely that you will be able to run Black Ops 2 with a swoop in five hours, like the previous parts of the series, especially if you play on a high level of difficulty.

12. Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts

  • Platforms: PC, PS3, XBOX 360, PS4, XBOX One, Wii U
  • Released: November 5, 2013
  • Developer: Infinity Ward
Not so distant future (2023). A coalition of South American countries led by a certain Roarke, taking advantage of the weakening economy and foreign policy influence of the United States, inflicts a treacherous blow on the United States, occupying most of their territories. Only a few volunteers, including the elite special forces "Ghosts", are trying to resist the invaders. In the role of one of the members of this squad, players will have to fight on the ground and in space, using their own ingenuity and an advanced arsenal of weapons, as well as at some moments switch to control their faithful partner - the dog Riley.

Unfortunately, the storyline ends with an open ending and, due to the insufficiently high financial performance of the project, the continuation planned by the studio will never be seen. The game did not impress the audience, even the various multiplayer modes and the new Extinction (the battle of a team of players against alien monsters that replaced the traditional zombies) did not change the situation in a positive way.

14. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

  • Platforms: PC, PS3, XBOX 360, PS4, XBOX One
  • Released: November 4, 2014
  • Developer: Sledgehammer Games

An even longer leap into the future, namely 2054. By this time, the world order had changed dramatically: the governments of the leading powers ceased to be so powerful, and high-tech corporations took over all power, making the entire globe dependent on their developments. Moreover, honest people are not always at the helm of such companies - some leaders use their resources to achieve personal gain, which ultimately leads to numerous casualties among the civilian population. One of these villains, whose appearance and voice was presented by the famous Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey, players will have to confront during a 7-8 hour story campaign, packed to overflowing with dynamic action scenes.

The technology of the future in the new Call of Duty has finally begun to be used to its fullest. The fighters are equipped with jetpacks for additional maneuverability, durable exoskeletons that greatly enhance their physical capabilities, and a whole range of advanced gadgets. No shelter nearby? It doesn't matter - go to the car and rip out its door, hiding behind it like a human shield. Want to ambush enemies? Use new homing grenades that will find the target themselves and fly up close to it. And this is only a small part of the possibilities.

15. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

  • Platforms: PC, PS3, XBOX 360, PS4, XBOX One
  • Released: November 6, 2015
  • Developer: Treyarch

The third part of the Black Ops mini-series. He continues to develop the topic of an alternative future, making a leap forward for several decades. Apparently, the creators of the project are not going to return to the story of Mason and his descendants, but in the course of the new plot, the old events and their influence on the new surrounding reality with super-soldiers and cybernetic modifications of bodies are casually mentioned. The main character will have to fight opponents (among whom there are not only people, but also robots) both in futuristic locations and in computer simulations. The plot is traditionally insane and confusing, but that doesn't make it any less interesting.

It is worth praising BO3 for two things - significantly improved graphics compared to the previous part and improved vertical gameplay. Now players can not only jump a couple of meters up using rocket packs, but also run along the walls, while not being deprived of the opportunity to shoot. In multiplayer, innovations were also added, namely, character classes. Each of them has their own ultimate skill, which gives advantages in battle, but you can use it only a couple of times per game.

16. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XBOX One
  • Release date: November 4, 2016
  • Developer: Infinity Ward
When all the original ideas for possible military conflicts on Earth were exhausted, the developers from Infinity Ward went even further - they came up with a sci-fi story about the confrontation between earthlings and alien invaders. In the distant future, people successfully colonized Mars, but then radical forces came to power on the red planet, first requesting autonomy, and then deciding to take control of their once homeland. Now the resistance will have to repel the attack of the enemy and drive him back using the most advanced weapons and vehicles. A lot of time is devoted to space battles and additional missions that gamers may or may not perform at their own discretion.

Included with the new game, if you buy the full Deluxe Edition, you will receive a remaster of one of the series' most beloved classics - Modern Warfare. A colossal work was done to transfer it to a new advanced engine, to include high-resolution textures and new effects in the game, thanks to which the project, released more than 10 years ago, began to look no worse than modern shooters. Especially liked the re-release of fans of dynamic and not overloaded with unnecessary body kits multiplayer. Many people still play it now.

17. Call of Duty: WWII

Call of Duty: WWII

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XBOX One
  • Released: November 3, 2017
  • Developer: Sledgehammer Games

One thing to praise the creators of the Call of Duty series for is their timing. They analyze the needs of the audience and dump the product that they like and sell tens of millions of copies on PCs and consoles. We played around with the WWII theme, it became boring - they began to move into modern times. Tired of modernity - moved on to the future. And now it's time to give players something realistic to replace rocket packs and shootouts with robots. Moreover, the genre of war films has recently opened up a second wind (Rage, Dunkirk, etc.). This time, the Russians were completely forgotten and focused on the history of the American military fighting in Western Europe.

Unlike other Call of Duty in the surroundings of World War II, there is a common storyline that allows you to go through the entire campaign with recruits Daniels, Zusman and other interesting personalities endowed with their own character and backstory. If you do not want to once again arrange a race through the trenches with the shooting of the Germans - then welcome to the "Reich Zombie" mode. The Occult-savvy Fritzes managed to raise an army of the dead to defend Berlin, and now you co-op with your friends (or random players found through a search) have to survive on one of the many available maps.

18. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XBOX One
  • Release date: October 12, 2018
  • Developer: Treyarch

The game of the series has radically changed the vector of its development. Previously, the biggest advantage of CoD was the storyline campaign, but now it has more emphasis on co-op and multiplayer. The single player mode is presented here only by a set of small introductory tasks that allow you to get acquainted with the operators and their skills. However, do not worry too much about this - the plot was presented with an equivalent replacement in the form of the recently popular battle royale mode, where a large number of players parachute into a vast playing area and fight until there is only one survivor (or a squad of survivors, if you prefer command modes).

The other two modes are zombie survival (a classic format that has been used several times in the series, but with minor improvements and new maps), as well as competitive multiplayer. In the latter, an emphasis was placed on meaningful teamwork - now it will be much more difficult to show efficiency by chaotically running and shooting at everyone on the map. We'll have to interact with allies and competently use the skills of each of the available classes.

19. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

  • Platforms: PC, PS4, XBOX One
  • Release date: 25, 2019
  • Developer: Infinity ward

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a relaunch of the eponymous first-person shooter series. A dynamic plot directed at the action movie level, where the player as high-class fighters affects the global balance of power in the world, performs exciting covert operations as part of international special forces in Europe and in the troubled Middle East. There is a co-op and several multiplayer modes for entertainment and e-sports.

The storyline campaign isn't the only thing about the Modern Warfare relaunch. The new shooting is just awesome, and the multiplayer is able to offer a lot of content and cool game mechanics. Fans of Sergeant Grafouni will be delighted with the picture and optimization, and audiophiles will catch an orgasm from the sound. The main thing to remember is that this is just a game.

20. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

  • Platforms: PC , PlayStation 5 , Xbox Series X , PlayStation 4 , Xbox One
  • Release date:  November 13, 2020
  • Developer: Treyarch , Raven Software

The last part of the franchise at the moment, The game Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a possible sequel to the popular first-person shooter series. The game is a direct sequelCall of Duty: Black Ops . The action takes place in the 80s of the last century. The plot tells about how a certain Perseus decided to destabilize the situation in the world and change the course of history. The main characters will have to stop the antagonist. The game will include both old characters (Woods, Mason and Hudson), familiar to gamers from previous parts, and new ones.

Let's sum up

The Call of Duty series has been subject to well-founded criticism for overt hack for years. First of all, the reproach is the reluctance of developers to switch to a new engine - attempts to rejuvenate the old one lead to an unreasonably increasing load on computer hardware, incommensurate with the mediocre picture quality. Even the owners of relatively modern processors are forced to put up with 100% load of cores, and the requirements for RAM and video memory are impressive. The second obvious drawback is monotony. The shooting gallery and plot scenes are no longer impressive, and the multiplayer practically does not change at all (except for the battle royale, which is really a novelty for the series).

Nevertheless, even taking into account all of these shortcomings, CoD demonstrates sales levels that are many times higher than those of all competitors. No Battlefield or Rainbow Six has ever dreamed of such volume of digital copies sold. Therefore, we can say with confidence that the conveyor will continue to operate for at least another five to seven years.
