The most anticipated Nintendo Switch games that could arrive in 2021

The most anticipated Nintendo Switch games that could arrive in 2021

Nintendo Switch will enter 2021 on the crest of the wave, with a seemingly unstoppable sales success. But, will they accompany this time with a catalog of first party games to match? There are reasons to be optimistic... These are the great games for Nintendo Switch that could arrive during 2021.

By all indications, the Nintendo Switch has already passed the halfway point of its life. In March 2021 it will be 4 years old, and if its current sales rhythm is maintained , it is possible that by that time it will already have about 80 million consoles sold. A hit with little precedent even at Nintendo, which could rival the Wii (101 million) and even the Nintendo DS (154 million) as its best-selling console.

It all depends, of course, on the plans that Nintendo has for Switch. There are many rumors and indications that speak of a new model, a "Nintendo Switch Pro" , which would come out next year, maybe early. This would allow to extend the life of the console more than usual.. to the point that there are analysts who foresee that this blurs the traditional concept of generations at Nintendo.

The latest Nintendo consoles from the Nintendo 64 to the Wii U were already showing signs of exhaustion within four years of their release. Wii held out longer, from 2006 to 2012, but the sales rate decreased notably from 2010 to 2011, when all the "casual" bullets had already used up (Wii Fit, Wii Sports and sequels, New Super Mario Bros. and Mari Kart Wii). This is not the case with Switch, which will close 2020 as its best year in sales... due, in large part, to the pandemic, which has driven all consoles, with the only obstacle being stock.

And it has done so despite having had an alarmingly short year of news. Animal Crossing New Horizons , together with the continued success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokémon Sword / Shield or Ring Fit Adventure, have turned out to be more than enough to continue promoting the console this year, despite the discontent of fans, who have not found many important novelties beyond Paper Mario The Origami King or Hyrule Warriors The Age of Cataclysm.

Will things change next year? The increasingly strong rumors about the Switch Pro, together with the suspicions that Nintendo delayed many of its tricks due to the pandemic, and the need to accompany this supposed revision of the console with a strong catalog that rivals the PS5 and Xbox Series X makes us feel optimistic. These are some of the Nintendo Switch games (not confirmed) that have the best chance of seeing the light of day in 2021..

Remember that, already confirmed, there are (exclusive) things like Monster Hunter Rise , Bravely Default II , Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury , Shin Megami Tensei V or No More Heroes 3.

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2

It is the game of the million, the most anticipated by Nintendo users since its announcement at E3 2019. We have not seen anything yet (although we have received the prequel / spin-off of Breath of the Wild). However, almost all bets place it for 2021, and for one reason in particular: to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the saga .

The Legend of Zelda Collection / Wind Waker and Twilight Princess

The Legend of Zelda Collection / Wind Waker and Twilight Princess

Just like this year we have had new (and old) Mario games for the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., in 2021 it is the first The Legend of Zelda on the NES that turns 35. For that reason, in addition to a new game, many expect a compilation for Nintendo Switch in the Super Mario 3D All Stars style, but with the games of the Zelda saga .

The first three Zelda, up to A Link to the Past, are in the NES and SNES apps of Switch Online. The fourth, Link's Awakening , has already had its remake. What will happen to the next installments?

The easiest case is that of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess , those of GameCube, which had HD remasters on Wii U. Virtually all Wii U games have ended up also coming out on Switch, so these are almost guaranteed, maybe in a double pack?

Those of Nintendo 64, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask , have it more complicated. Nintendo could pull direct ports of those games, in the style of Mario 64 in the compilation. However, both games had much improved remakes on Nintendo 3DS, and it would be a shame if they weren't also adapted to HD ... although that would mean extra work than in the case of the Wii U remakes, since 3DS is hardware very different than Switch...

Finally, there is Skyward Sword , the Wii exclusive. Several rumors said that Nintendo would have planned a remake for Switch, in the style of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on Wii U. And watch out for the dates: WW and TP came out in 2003 and 2006, and their remasters, in 2013 and 2016, ten years later. When did Skyward Sword come out?

2D Metroid / Metroid Prime Trilogy

2D Metroid / Metroid Prime Trilogy

Metroid also turns 35 in 2021... although until now Nintendo has never celebrated bounty hunter Samus Aran's birthday. We know that Metroid Prime 4 is in development, but with everything that is taking (Retro Studios is constantly launching new job openings) we would be very surprised to see it before 2022 . However, there are several ways to continue the saga.

The most obvious is Metroid Prime Trilogy HD , a game that is probably already finished, but Nintendo does not want to release until it is closer to Prime 4, to make its launch profitable. It would be as easy as adapting the trilogy that already came out on Wii, but keeping the original GameCube controls (and perhaps adding some extra mode, although we don't go too crazy asking for things, which later we get disappointed).

We have more confidence that Mercury Steam will surprise us with a 2D Metroid, be it a new map or a Super Metroid remake. The Spanish studio that has been missing since the launch of Metroid Samus Returns in 2017...

Bayonetta 3

Bayonetta 3

It was one of the "smoke" announcements of the 2017 Game Awards. That is, three years have passed and we have not heard from anything about the game, which will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch . From time to time Kamiya says that it is still in development, that it has not been canceled or anything like that, but since they are able to let 2021 pass without offering any more details to reassure users, it is to feed them separately.

New Camelot game

New Camelot game

Let's now highlight three of Nintendo's most prolific studios that should be releasing games this year. The first of them is Camelot, specialized in Mario sports games, and so far they have only released Mario Tennis Aces on Switch in 2018. It is very likely that in 2021 we will have a new Mario sports game, perhaps a Mario Golf, or hopefully a Mario Sports Mix to spice it up.

However, Camelot is remembered by many for its RPG Golden Sun saga, which hasn't appeared since two GBA installments and one DS installment ten years ago. A new Golden Sun would undoubtedly be a riskier project (and with lower sales expectations) than a Mario Golf... But the success of Octopath and Bravely Default shows that the Switch is the ideal console for a classic RPG. Cross our fingers.

New game from Next Level Games

New game from Next Level Games

Next Level Games is a second party responsible for one of the biggest hits on 3DS and Switch: Luigi's Mansion 2 and 3 . Besides... Metroid Prime Federation Force , which wasn't that bad! It was a very ambitious game for the console that it was, like a Destiny adapted to 3DS.

The Canadians also worked with Punch Out on Wii, creating Mario Striker s perhaps the most fun (and aggressive - too aggressive for today's Nintendo?) Mario sports game. Having released Luigi's Mansion 3 in 2019, it is one of the main candidates to have something ready for the next Christmas.

New Grezzo game

New Grezzo game

Grezzo is one of the second Nintendo parties that helped Nintendo 3DS the most, creating the remakes of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask , that of Luigi's Mansion and also the new IP Ever Oasis .

They showed that they can adapt to HD with The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening , released in 2019. By 2021 they may not have their next game in time, but we would not be surprised to see it at least... and logic dictates that it is another of the remakes / Zelda remasters for Switch that we talked about before.

New game from Intelligent Systems

New game from Intelligent Systems

Intelligent Systems, the house of Fire Emblem and Paper Mario , has already more than delivered on Switch, with two good installments of its two main series. What will be the next step? Given the success of Fire Emblem , we wouldn't be surprised to see a new installment in the future, although perhaps releasing it two years after Three Houses is hasty . A new IP? We loved Code Name STEAM , an XCOM cool game with Steampunk aesthetics for 3DS. It would be great to even see a new Advance War, now that the studio is stronger than ever...

A lot, a lot Pokémon

A lot, a lot Pokémon

And we end up with another birthday franchise. Pokémon turns 25 in 2021 , and we are sure to have a good portion of games this year. The franchise has been one of the most active on Nintendo Switch, and although we do not expect a new generation so soon, it is extremely likely that by Christmas 2021 we will have a new remake of a previous generation. The bets speak of a "big" remake of Pearl and Diamond, or a "Let's Go" version of the second generation.

Whatever happens, we shouldn't take long to receive New Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Unite (the Pokémon MOBA for Switch and mobile), two alternative but highly anticipated proposals . It is also very likely that the Switch version of Detective Pikachu will finally come out ... and there are sure to be surprises. The Pokémon Company usually reveals news in February, so stay tuned for those dates.
