The ingenious RPG Gothic 2 is still popular today. Unfortunately, installing it on Windows 10 is not that easy. We explain to you here on OkayGotcha how you can get Gothic 2 working in Windows 10.
Play Gothic 2 in Windows 10
If you don't want to wait long, you might install the GOG version of Gothic 2 for around 10 euros. It includes the gold edition including the add-on "The Night of the Raven". However, problems can arise here or with the Steam version under Windows 10. Read on to find out how to get the game up and running.
Gothic 2 cannot be installed: Error in Windows 10
If you try to install Gothic 2, you will probably see an error message like "Gothic II could not be installed successfully because no original CD could be found." - even if you inserted the original CDs. Under certain circumstances the game simply does not start after installation, graphics errors occur during the game or the installation from the CDs simply does not work.
Install Gothic 2 anyway
These instructions apply to:
- Gothic 2 with the addon "The Night of the Raven"
- Steam, GOG or CD variant
Manual:
- Install Gothic 2. If that doesn't work with the CD version, download the Steam or GOG version.
- Install the patch 2.6. To do this, click on the downloaded file "gothic2_fix-2.6.0.0-rev2.exe" with the right mouse button and select "Run as administrator ". Install the patch in your Gothic 2 installation directory. For example, for Steam:C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Gothic II\
- Download the “ Gothic 2 Playerkit 2.8 ” and install it by right-clicking on the “Gothic2_PlayerKit-2.8.exe” file and selecting “Run as administrator ”. Also installs the playerkit in the installation folder of Gothic 2.
- Then you download the " SystemPack v1.8 " from the same website. You need the file "G2NoTR-SystemPack-1.8.exe". The abbreviation "NoTR" stands for "Night of The Raven", so it means the add-on version "The Night of the Raven". Right-click on the EXE file and select "Run as administrator ". Selects the German language version during installation. As the installation path you choose your Gothic 2 directory again.
- Optional: Install the current renderer for "Gothic 2". This puts the computing load on the graphics card instead of the CPU. You also have nicer graphics. Click with the right mouse button on the file "D3D11_Renderer_Clockwork_Edition_Gothic_II_17.7.13.exe" and select "Run as administrator ". Follow the installation wizard and enter the installation path of Gothic 2 again.
- Navigate to your Gothic 2 installation directory. For Steam that is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Gothic II\.
- Opens the " System " subfolder .
- Click with the right mouse button on the file " Gothic2.exe ", click on " Properties ", switch to the tab " Compatibility " and tick " Run program as administrator " below .
- Do the same with the GothicStarter.exe file .
Start Gothic 2
- Navigate to your Gothic 2 installation directory. For Steam that is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Gothic II\.
- Double click on the " GothicStarter.exe " file to play Gothic 2.
- If everything works, you can now, for example, install additional mods for the game.
