Pokémon GO Guide: Get and exchange XL candies

The XL candies in Pokémon GO are an in-game resource. We'll show you what they can do, how expensive it is to level Pokémon and what else you need to know about them.

What are XL candies anyway? Niantic announced these new candies at the same time as the big winter update for Pokémon GO. The new maximum level in the game is level 50 . To achieve this, you also have to use XL candies.

From level 1 to 40 you continue to use stardust and candy for level-ups of your Pokémon. After level 40 you have to switch to stardust and XL candies.

So that you do it correctly and are well prepared, we show you everything you need to know about XL Candy here in the guide.

How do you find XL candies?

You have to reach this level: Your trainer must be at least level 40 so that you can even receive the XL candies.

XL sweets as a reward: Various activities in Pokémon GO bring you the coveted XL sweets. We list the already known ones here for you. Keep in mind, however, that most activities do not guarantee the candy. The table shows the possibility of where the candy can originate as a reward.

What about sanana berries? So far, the sanana berries have had no effect on the amount of XL candy. It didn't make them appear more often. The amount of XL sweets was not increased by using Sanana berries.

What about other eggs? So far there have been no XL candies from the 2 km eggs and the 7 km eggs.

Exchange of sweets: If you want, you can convert your sweets into XL sweets. This works in a ratio of 100 to 1. So 100 normal candies become one XL candy, if that's what you want. This is especially worthwhile after events such as a Community Day, when you have been able to collect hundreds of candies for a species.

Sending Pokémon: A trainer analyzed how sending Pokémon works to receive XL candies. He found that the level of the Pokémon has a significant impact on the chance of XL candy.

What do level-ups with XL candies cost?

You have to expect that: The costs for the level-ups are quite high. Since you have to use two level-ups per level of a Pokémon, you can quickly collect a large sum. As the data miners from PokeMiners (via Twitter) show in a graphic, it costs you 250,000 stardust and 296 XL candies to bring a Pokémon from level 40 to level 50.

In the following table you can see the stardust and XL candy costs from level 41.

According to testers, it costs less candy to level your redeemed Pokémon with power-ups. Crypto Pokémon, on the other hand, should be a bit more expensive.

The levels after 40 are also interesting for coaches. Because in order to reach the level-up, you don't just have to collect XP.

How do you like the new XL sweets? Do you think Niantic took a good step with this or is that something you don't like?
