PS5 storage: how many games can the storage hold?

What is the point of a new console if there is not enough storage space? In the following we show you how big the memory of the PlayStation 5 is and how many games you can put on the hard drive. We'll also explain how you can best expand the storage capacity.

Since the PS5 specs are known, we not only know the technical data, such as the connections or downward compatibility , but also how large the storage space is. After everyone knows the dimensions of the console, we can also plan the space for the PS5 in the living room at home.

What is the storage capacity of the PlayStation 5?

The PlayStation 5 comes with  an  SSD hard drive with 825 gigabytes of storage. Important:  After the system installation, however, only 667.2 GB of the internal memory can be used for games and media  (screenshots and videos) . The operating system of the PS5 therefore requires around 20% of the storage capacity.

The biggest change comes with upgrading the hard drive with SSD. A solid-state drive reads the data much faster than an HDD that is built into the PS4, which results in shorter loading times and, of course, improved overall performance.

Can the memory be expanded?

In short: yes, but there is a catch, at least with the internal memory expansion!  PS5 owners have the option of expanding the internal storage space. You don't even have to use Sony's own hardware. You can use a commercially available M.2 NVM SSD hard drive for this.

The catch: The M.2 NVM SSD must have the new PCI Express 4.0 interface, otherwise there is no compatibility with the console. In addition, this feature of the PlayStation 5 is not yet functional.

When the console is released, the PS5 will not support internal memory expansion, Sony confirmed to The Verge. The slot for expanding the storage space in the PS5 is deactivated for the launch, because, as Sony says, this feature is reserved for a future update. It is not yet clear when the update will come.

If you are currently installing an internal SSD in the PS5, you will receive an error message. Recommendation: Do not install an internal SSD yet, but wait until compatible models are known and Sony activates the feature. Incidentally, Sony would like to equip the supported SSDs with a certificate so that you can quickly get the necessary overview.

Although the PS5 supports external USB hard drives or external SSDs, they are currently only suitable for outsourcing PS4 games and PS4 storage data. PS5 games must be stored on the internal SSD hard drive. We are currently assuming that you can only move PS5 games to an external SSD hard drive as soon as the certified devices are known and the feature is supported.

For the sake of clarity, we will show you in the following table which data / file types that are on the PS5 can be swapped out  where:

Make sure that you can only copy screenshots and videos to the USB stick. It is not possible to transfer the media from the USB stick back to the console.

How many games can I fit on the hard drive?

At the moment we can only answer this question with an estimate . We don't currently know how much space a PS5 game will take up on the hard drive. As a result, we do not have a confirmed installation size yet.

AAA games take up an average of 40-50 GB on the PS4. However, some games can get enormously larger, the best example of which is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. CoD Modern Warfare takes up around 208 GB with all its components and FF7 Remake around 73 GB. If PS5 games should have such values, the 667 GB of usable  storage space quickly reaches its limit.

If we assume that a PS5 game takes up 50 GB on average , you can install 13 games . With 40 GB of titles, you can store up to 16 PS5 games .

On the new consoles, however, it should be expected that the games will require a little more memory than in the previous generation. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, one of the exclusive games , for example, requires 105 GB of memory. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War even 130 GB. Having 6 to 12 games  on the console at the same time sounds more realistic.

So you use the memory as efficiently as possible

In addition to the general tips and settings for consoles, you should of course try to use the storage space as efficiently as possible. The most important thing is that you use an external hard drive for backwards compatible games , if you want to play certain PS4 games on the PS5. You can also use an external SSD hard drive for this, which can also shorten the loading times.

You can also turn off the automatic trophy videos and screenshots in the settings. Over time, the media build up and can take up a lot of storage capacity. If you want to deactivate it, proceed as follows:

  • Go to the settings, the gear at the top right.
  • Then click on “Recordings and Transfers”.
  • Go to the tabs on the left on "Trophies" and set your preferred setting there.

The most efficient and at the same time the most obvious method is of course to delete games and media that you no longer need from the internal hard drive.
