Instagram: Account hacked - what to do?

Instagram: Account hacked - what to do?

If your Instagram account has been hacked, you can try to get it back. We explain how to do that here on OkayGotcha.

Instagram account hacked: these are the signs

The following signs indicate that your Instagram account has been hacked:

  • You see pictures and comments that were posted from your Instagram account without your knowledge.
  • You can no longer log in to or access your Instagram account.
  • Your Instagram account was deleted without your consent.

Problem: Instagram account hacked using a password

Someone found your password and logged into Instagram with your account details. Most likely the perpetrator is someone you know or who is interested in your life. If someone logs into Instagram with your account data, you will receive an email with the message " Hello, we have detected a new registration ".

Solution: (restore and) change password

If you notice strange changes to your account (posted pictures, comments or changed data such as profile picture), you should change your Instagram password immediately . If you notice that someone has already changed your password, restore it to your e-mail address and then change it with a password of your choice.

Uses a unique and secure password with at least 15 characters (including lowercase, uppercase and special characters).

Next, you should disable access to all third-party applications. External users can access and manipulate your Instagram account. Also enables two-factor authentication .

Problem: Instagram account hacked via email address

If someone hacked your Instagram account using your email address, you will no longer have access to your account and you will not be able to restore your previous password.

Solution: Undo changes

If someone hacked your email address, they can use it to request a new password for the Instagram login and even store a different email address. However, Instagram itself sends a notice beforehand about changes to the account with a link “ Undo these changes ”. If you still have access to your own email address, you should click the link, which will change your password and restore your Instagram account with a new, secure email address. Here, too, you should then deny access to third-party apps. We also recommend  enabling two-factor authentication .
