Microsoft's new FPS Boost for Xbox Series X & S doubles game frame rates

Microsoft is launching a new FPS Boost feature for its latest Xbox Series X and Series S consoles that aims to improve the performance of existing games. While Microsoft previously focused on backward compatible framerate boosts for its latest Xbox consoles, FPS Boost is specifically designed to improve older games without having to do any additional work for developers.

The first games to support FPS Boost are Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky's Tale, Sniper Elite 4, UFC 4, and Watch Dogs 2 . The improvements vary by game: New Super Lucky's Tale now runs at up to 120fps, and UFC 4 includes 60fps performance specifically on Xbox Series S.

Games that run with FPS Boost will turn on a new indicator when you press the Xbox button on your controller, just like Fast Resume or Auto HDR indicators appear today on Xbox Series X and S consoles.

“This is just the beginning,” explains Paul Eng, Xbox Senior Program Manager. "We will be announcing and releasing more games with FPS Boost support soon as we roll out new menu icons and system settings in an upcoming system update."

This new dashboard update is coming in spring and will include the ability to toggle compatibility settings in games. You can turn automatic HDR off or turn this new FPS Boost on or off to really see the impact it has, or just play games in their original form.
