New details about the improved version of Metro Exodus

Last November, Developers at 4A Games Revealed Metro Series Roadmap and Confirmed Metro Exodus Coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S in 2021 as a free update to take full advantage of these new consoles. The team shared more details today and announced that an enhanced edition and PC version of Metro Exodus will be released this year .


  • For Xbox Series X Consoles | S and PlayStation 5 will radically overhaul the proprietary 4A engine and implement full ray tracing.
  • The team has created a brand new full ray traced lighting pipeline that brings a number of optimizations, updates and new features for ray traced global illumination and emissive lighting, as well as an updated implementation of powerful temporal reconstruction technology to further enhance resolution, visual detail and performance.
  • Metro Exodus will operate at a speed of 4K / 60 frames per second with full illumination with ray tracing for PlayStation 5 and Xbox X Series . The base game and DLC will include both ray-traced global illumination (RTGI) technology and innovative ray-traced emission lighting techniques in the Two Colonels expansion.
  • Next-gen consoles will benefit from massively faster loading times from SSDs, boasting 4K texture packs and a number of platform-specific features, including spatial audio and controller latency improvements on the Xbox , and support for the PlayStation 5 Dual Sense controller's tactile functionality .
  • On Xbox Series S, the game will run at 1080p with full ray-traced lighting.
  • The authors are working on additional polish and quality of life improvements, including the ability to change the field of view for the first time in a Metro game.
  • Console versions will be released later this year and will be available as a free upgrade to all current owners.
  • PC players will also benefit from the new full ray traced lighting pipeline.
  • The update is so extensive that it will require a ray-traced GPU as a minimum specification, and will ship as a standalone game rather than a patch to the existing Metro Exodus .
  • The PC version of the Enhanced Edition will offer additional ray tracing features, including Advanced Ray Traced Reflections and DLSS 2.0 support on NVIDIA hardware for sharper image detail as well as higher frame rates and screen resolutions.
  • The Extended PC Edition will be free to all Metro Exodus owners on the Epic Games Store, Steam and GoG. You can expect the PC Enhanced Edition to be released this spring.
