WhatsApp does not notify you if you receive messages? So you can fix the notifications

We use WhatsApp at all hours and that is probably why it is the first that we notice if it is failing. Notifications do not always reach us correctly, we do not see them as they should or messages do not reach us until we open the application. In these cases, we explain how to fix WhatsApp notifications or what are the most common failures that usually suffer.

The first thing you have to do to fix WhatsApp notifications is to find where the problem is or what may be happening. You may simply not have sound on your phone, so there is no major problem. But there are other problems that we can find on a day-to-day basis and that make the phone not send us notifications when we receive a message. Configure your phone correctly to make sure it is not one of the usual failures: you have Internet, no option to restrict data is activated ...

Check that you have Internet

Make sure you have Internet from your mobile phone. Check that you can access any web page from the browser you have installed or that the rest of the applications work correctly. If you don't have Internet, this may be the reason why WhatsApp notifications are not reaching you. Activate and deactivate the Airplane Mode of the mobile.

Make sure your phone has sound

If you receive the notification but you do not get the sound warning you of a new message, make sure you have volume and sound on the phone at that time. You can also go to the "Sound" section of your phone to check exactly what the volume of notifications is, as it may be too low . Although the route may vary, we can almost always go from:

  • Settings
  • Sounds and vibration
  • Silent / Do Not Disturb mode

Here you can adjust the specific sound of:

  • Multimedia
  • Tone
  • Alarms
  • Calls

Check if you have a group or conversation muted

One of the functions that WhatsApp allows us is to silence a contact, a group, a specific chat. You may have done it involuntarily and that is the reason why messages or notifications from WhatsApp do not reach you. In any case, we can check it in a matter of seconds: Open the conversation or chat from which you do not receive notifications and tap on the three points in the upper right corner. It is possible that you have muted a WhatsApp group or conversation and have automatically muted notifications and not just the sound. In that case, you can check them one by one.

  • Click on the individual or group chat you want to check
  • Click on the name of the contact or name of the group
  • Check that the "Silence notifications" section is deactivated
  • Go one by one to the chats you want to check
Remember that you can mute a chat or group if you want it not to sound when there is a new message but that does not have to eliminate notifications. You can silence it for eight hours, a week, or a year. When you do, remember to check "Show notifications" so that they continue to appear as usual.

Restart the mobile

It may seem obvious or almost absurd, but many times restarting the mobile phone is the best way to solve basic problems. It may be that you can fix WhatsApp notifications and once you turn it on again they work correctly and everything continues to work normally. If not, try the following solutions as the following problems are usually the most common and frequent.

Do Not Disturb Mode

One of the most common reasons why a WhatsApp notification may not reach us or messages may not reach us until we open the application is because we have Do Not Disturb Mode activated. This means that notifications are not sent even if the application works normally. Make sure it is disabled.

  • Open the mobile phone settings
  • Find the Sound / Sounds and vibration section
  • Choose the option "Do not disturb"
  • Check that Do Not Disturb Mode is not activated

Also check that we do not have the Do not disturb option activated, sliding down on the notification bar of our phone. If for any reason or inadvertently we have activated it, it will have silenced our mobile and therefore, will prevent us from receiving notifications or calls.

Stop the application

It may seem useless or even obvious, but many times the best way to fix notifications from WhatsApp or any other application is to stop the app for a few seconds and start it again. It will barely take a minute to do so and this will unlock something that may have been left hanging.

  • Long press the app icon
  • Click on the information button of the options
  • Application information will open
  • Click on Stop
  • Confirm with the "Stop" button in the pop-up window

Close sessions on WhatsApp Web

It is possible that you have left a session open in WhatsApp Web and the notifications do not come out because they already appear in the computer version. Or even because someone may be using your WhatsApp and reading the messages. In that case and to rule out that this is the problem, you can close all sessions. To do it:

  • Open WhatsApp on your mobile phone
  • Click on the three dots in the upper right corner
  • Go to the option "WhatsApp Web"
  • Click on the button "Close all sessions"

Background data

Beyond Do Not Disturb Mode, many phones have a background data restriction option that makes an application not work if we do not open it. This may mean that you are not receiving WhatsApp notifications even if you are receiving messages. You won't see them until you open the app. Check that you do not have this option activated and thus you will rule out that this is the problem.

  • Go to your mobile phone settings
  • Open the applications section or section
  • Choose the Applications / Application Manager option
  • Find WhatsApp in the list
  • Go to  "Data usage"
  • Check that the Background Data option is activated

Check mobile phone permissions

Another common failure is that we have installed WhatsApp but we have not reviewed or accepted the permissions. If we do not accept, the application may not work fully or we may not be receiving notices. Check the permits.

  • Go to the settings of your Android mobile phone
  • Look for the "Applications" section
  • Choose WhatsApp among all those that appear
  • Click on "Permissions"
  • Check that all are activated
  • Active in case there is one that was not activated
  • Try again if notifications have already been fixed

Check that you have notifications activated

You may have inadvertently turned off notifications when you received one or muted the app. In that case, go to WhatsApp to make sure that notifications are activated from the application itself and from the phone.

  • Go to WhatsApp
  • Click on the three dots in the upper right corner
  • Access the Notifications section
  • Check that notifications are turned on

Another option to check notifications is to check WhatsApp from the application information on your Android mobile phone, checking one by one.

  • Press and hold the WhatsApp icon on your screen
  • Click on the "Information" symbol
  • The application information will open
  • Tap on the first section, notifications
  • Check that the switch is on for all
  • Press one by one each notification or type of it
  • Make sure the switch is on at all

You may not have received a notification because some type was disabled from this menu. Once all are activated, they should arrive without problem.

Reset preferences

We can also try to reset the preferences of the applications on our mobile phone. In this way, we can see if this way the WhatsApp settings are reset and it makes the problem with notifications resolved. For it:

  • We open the phone settings.
  • We enter Applications
  • Then we go back to Applications or Application Manager. This option may vary depending on each phone model.
  • On the application list screen we tap on the menu button
  • We select the option Reset applications.

WiFi inactivity

From the company itself they offer other options to try to solve problems with WhatsApp notifications. In addition to those mentioned, we must try to check the inactivity settings of the WiFi and make sure that it is set to Always. To do this, we have to go to the phone settings, enter the WiFi section, touch the menu button to enter the settings or advanced configuration and once there we check that the WiFi option during suspension is set to Always.

Beware of task managers

If we have installed a task manager on our mobile phone then the most likely thing is that we will have problems receiving notifications with WhatsApp messages. And it is that this type of programming does not allow the messaging app to receive messages when the application is not open. Therefore, this will prevent us from receiving messages if the app is closed. In this case, what we must do to avoid problems is to uninstall the task manager of our phone to solve the problems.

If you use Hangouts, try restarting it

If we use the Hangouts application in addition to WhatsApp, we may have some kind of conflict between both applications. As indicated by WhatsApp itself, one of the things we must do to solve the problems with the notifications of the application is to close all the Hangouts accounts and start the application again. It usually has nothing to do with it but it may have caused problems in some cases. To do this, just go to the app, click on the menu button and select the option Exit all accounts. Then, we can try to enter Hangouts again, log in and check if we correctly receive WhatsApp notifications.
