What kind of quest is that? "The Right Tool" is the fifth quest in Act 1 of Diablo 2. It guides you to the end of the act and is necessary for completion. In the course of the quest you will meet one of the first tougher opponents, the blacksmith.

You start the quest when at level 8 you either speak to Charsi in the hunters' camp or enter the Tamoe highlands. Before doing this, however, you must have freed Deckard Cain as part of the quest "The Search for Cain".

For the quest you should find the Horadric Malus, an enchanted blacksmith's hammer that the blacksmith Charsi left behind in the monastery. The reward is an item upgrade, with which you may even be able to collect particularly valuable items .

You have to complete the quest in order to receive the quest "Sisters to the Slaughter" afterwards, in which you defeat the first boss of Diablo 2: Andariel.

Find the Horadrian penalty in the barracks

Here you will find the penalty: The barracks is part of the renegade monastery, which you can find behind the Schwarzmoor. Cross the moor and look for the large monastery, which you can enter through the gate at the entrance.

There you will find the teleporter to the “Outer Monastery” and from there the passage to the barracks through a door. There is no map change. In the barracks you have to fight your way through some hunters and skeletons.

Look for the smithy in the building and do not go to the prison, which also has the entrance in the barracks. The smithy is a separate, unnamed place. You know you're in the right place when you find a great demon with a special name: the blacksmith.

The blacksmith is a so-called "super unique" who always appears there. Defeat or lure him away and interact with the weapon mount next to the forge. The penalty falls to the ground and you can pick it up.

How to defeat the blacksmith: The blacksmith is one of the first mini bosses in the game and is considered one of the first hurdles. He and his servants deal up to 2.5 times as much physical damage as normal opponents, so good armor will help. Tips for the fight are:

  • uses frost effects to slow the blacksmith down
  • fight at a distance if possible
  • It is best to equip your mercenary with a bow with frost effects if you cannot take care of it yourself

With enough damage output, you shouldn't have any major problems. Be careful though, especially in hardcore mode, so that one of his trowels doesn't blow the lights out unprepared. Alternatively, you can let the blacksmith be the blacksmith and just take the penalty.

Then bring the hammer back to Charsi and redeem your reward.

Free item upgrade and fight against Andariel

How to upgrade an item: After completing the quest, Charsi offers you to upgrade an item. This only works with non-magical items, which are then improved - for free. Remember, however, that you can only do this once per difficulty.

So it's best to save the option if you have found better items later in the game, for example from Act 5. Travel back and only then speak to Charsi.

Gold marks for upgrading are particularly popular because these items can have strong attributes. However, you can choose any normal item to upgrade.

This is how you defeat Andariel: After the penalty is back in Charsi's hands, Deckard Cain sends you on the hunt for Andariel. You can find this in the Inner Monastery, which you can enter through the aforementioned prison.

Andariel himself deals a lot of poison damage. So antidotes are a good option for your potion slots and in an emergency you can use a portal to get back into town before the poison becomes too strong. The lesser evil is very susceptible to fire damage. Use abilities of this element or put rubies in your weapons, if possible, to defeat Andariel faster.
