The new MMORPG New World offers countless possibilities for fighting as well as completely different content, such as fishing. That this is more than just a pastime in New World becomes clear at the latest with the coveted, rare fish. We show you how to get them and how to become a professional angler.

How does fishing work in New World? Fishing in the new MMORPG is a life skill, like most of the other things you can do on the side. It falls into the same category as harvesting vegetables or mining ore. In total, you can expand fishing 200 levels.

It follows the same pattern: the more you fish, the better you get at it. Of course, you also need the right tools, in this case a fishing rod and in the best case also bait, although these are not absolutely necessary.

Once equipped and found a suitable spot, you can cast your rod and wait for a fish to take a bite. You then have to catch up with this. The rarer the fish, the more it will fight back. A good tip is to stop pulling just before the fish's resistance reaches the red field.

If the fish shows no resistance at all, it could be a treasure chest that you definitely want to catch up with.

Where can you fish? You can fish wherever there are so-called hotspots. These come in three different levels and each contain rarer and larger fish than the level before.

The higher your fishing skill level, the more of it will be shown to you on the map and the compass. 

Basically, New World distinguishes between two different bodies of water: salty and sweet water. There are sometimes big differences between possible fish and bait that you should use.

You can also cast your rod further as the fishing level increases, which increases your chances of catching rare fish. So with fishing at level 15 you have a bonus of 0.75 meters on your throwing range.

Fishing works with this equipment

What types of fishing are there? Just like the tools of the other life skills, the fishing rods in New World come in 5 different versions, each of which requires different raw materials. You can make all of the fishing rods on a campfire of your choice.

For the first fishing rod made of simple wood, all you need is a piece of young wood and a rope and you're ready to go. The end of the series is the ironwood hinge. For them you need 15 ironwood planks, 3 hard leather and 2 linen.

You can also equip your fishing rods with various bonus skills during manufacture. For that you either need specific resources or the luck to get exactly the skill you wanted.

These bonus abilities of your fishing rod come in three levels of effectiveness. The “Lucky Day” bonus in the first stage gives you a 30% increased chance of catching rare fish during the day, while in the third stage it is a whopping 75%.

Still other bonuses improve your throwing distance or give you special bonuses for salt or fresh water. So it is possible to customize your fishing rod exactly according to your wishes.

What baits are there? If you want to fish effectively, you need bait. In principle you don't need bait to fish in New World, but the emphasis is on “effective”. Because the baits bring you massive advantages for certain types of fish.

If you are a level 5 chef, you can, among other things, prepare a cheese bait that improves the chance of rare fish in salt water by 47%. If you're not a cook, you can search through certain bushes and plants to get firefly bait. These increase the chance of rare fish in freshwater by as much as 85%.

Basically, New World distinguishes between baits that attract rare fish and baits that attract larger fish. But in any case, small bites on your hook are worthwhile. The oyster bait improves your chances of catching big fish in fresh water by an incredible 500% - it's definitely worth it.
