Connect PS5 controller to PS4 or PS3: this is how it works

 

If you want to connect your PS5 controller to the PS4, this is unfortunately only possible indirectly. The DualSense is compatible with the PS4, but only via remote play. In the following we will tell you how you can establish the connection and also connect the PS5 controller to the PS3.

Connecting the PS4 controller to the PS5 is easily possible, but how does it work the other way round? If you connect the PS5 controller to the PS4 with the USB-C cable, it will be charged, but you will not be able to control anything. In fact, this only works with a PC or laptop and remote play. How exactly, we explain to you here.

Connect PS5 controller to PS4 (via remote play)

1. First, download the PS Remote Play software onto your computer. There you can choose between Windows PC or Mac as platforms .
2. Install the software, start it and log in with your PSN account , which you also use on the PS4.
3. In the meantime, you can already connect your PS5 controller to the PC .
4. Also turn on your PS4 and log in here with your PSN account.
5. Before you select the PS4 as your device in the remote play window on your computer, click on the gear wheel on the left and set the resolution for the PS4 to the minimum of 360p in the "Video quality for remote play" tab. Since it is only about the transmission of the controller inputs and not the display on your PC, you can guarantee maximum speed. This is especially important if you only have a slow internet speed.
6. If you have then selected the PS4 as the device to be connected, wait to see whether a connection to your PS4 console is automatically established.
7. If not, switch to the settings on your PS4 and select the "Remote Play Connection Settings " .
8. An 8-digit code will now be displayed to you via "Add device" , which you can enter for the manual link in Remote Play.
9. If everything worked, the picture of the PS4 should now be transferred to your computer and you can use the PS5 controller to control it.

Connect the PS5 controller to the PS4 via Bluetooth

By the way, it is also possible to use the DualSense with your PS4 via Bluetooth. However, this does not currently help you, as the console cannot (yet) be controlled in this way. A future update that guarantees Bluetooth compatibility would be quite conceivable. That's why we explain to you in the following how the connection via Bluetooth works:

1. Simultaneously press the Create button (top left next to the touchpad) and the PlayStation button on the PS5 controller for a few seconds. The edge lights on the touchpad then begin to flash.
2. Now navigate to Settings → Devices → Bluetooth Devices on your PS4 .
3. Here the PS5 controller is now listed as "Wireless Controller" and you can select it.
4. A continuous glow on the controller confirms the successful connection.

As I said, you can currently not control anything with the DualSense on your PS4 via Bluetooth. Hopefully this will change soon.

Connect PS5 controller to PS3

If you still gamble on the PS3 from time to time, you won't have any problems with the PS5 controller here. Simply connect it to your PlayStation 3 with the USB-C cable and press the PlayStation button. The connection is established immediately and you can use it. This works just as easily here as with a PS3 controller.
