Diablo 2 Resurrected: Multiplayer, Co-op and Crossplay Explained

In Diablo 2: Resurrected you can fight cooperatively against monsters as well as let your characters compete against each other in PvP. Unlike in Diablo 3, however, couch co-op with split screen is not supported.

Multiplayer on PC

On the PC, the multiplayer is organized in lobbies, as in the 20-year-old original. So if you've played Diablo 2 on Battle.net in the past, you won't have to get used to it.

You can create your own lobbies as well as join open lobbies. Creating your own lobby is especially useful if you want to play with friends . In this case you can protect the lobby with a password. Your friends only have to enter the correct lobby name and password and you're good to go.

To just farm or advance in the campaign, we recommend joining an open lobby. These usually have descriptive names such as " NM Act 2 Q 1-6" . What is meant in this case is NM = nightmare (level of difficulty), Act 2 = Act 2 and Q 1-6 = Quest 1 to 6 . With a bit of getting used to it, you won't find it difficult to correctly interpret the names of the lobbies. You can also identify PvP lobbies this way.

Very popular are also lobbies where boss fights are repeated over and over , to farm experience points . These lobbies then have names like " Baalrun01" . As soon as you have joined one of these lobbies and defeated Baal, you should quickly return to the main menu and  look for the lobby " Baalrun02" in order to be there again the next time you try.

Multiplayer on consoles

There are no lobbies on the consoles, instead you rely on matchmaking. In the menu you can choose from all kinds of parameters, such as certain quests, bosses and the level of difficulty.

At the beginning, you will only be offered very few parameters to choose from. These depend on your own progress, so you have to have reached Act 3 yourself, for example, before you can search for it via matchmaking . The same goes for the levels of difficulty.

However, when you start the game it is never quite clear whether you are creating a session yourself or joining an open session. Overall, it is currently very difficult to find players on the console.

This is how you trade and exchange items with fellow players

In Diablo 2: Ressurected , every item can be exchanged without any restrictions. There is no account or soul-bound equipment as in modern games . Accordingly, trading in items plays a major role. In addition, there is no personalized loot. As a sorceress, for example, you can find a particularly powerful bow that you have no use for yourself. Anyone who plays an Amazon is happy to exchange this bow for you.

To swap items, you have to address the respective character in the game by standing next to the person and clicking them with the left mouse button or the interact button. A trading window will open.

In the upper left window you can see the offer from your trading partner. In the lower left window you can offer your own items for exchange. As soon as both players are satisfied, you can confirm the trade by clicking on the check mark.

This guarantees that both parties agree to the deal and that nobody goes away empty-handed. Among friends, you can simply throw the corresponding items on the floor so that the other person can pick them up .

Note:  You cannot trade or exchange items using your treasure chest, not even in the tabs with the title Shared . Instead, all of your own characters can access these tabs, for example to store runes or gems that are required by all of your characters.

Does Diablo 2: Resurrected offer crossplay?

Diablo 2: Resurrected is available on the PC and all common consoles, but there is no real crossplay . Nevertheless, individual console families can play together. This means that owners of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 can enter the same matches, as can Xbox One and Xbox Series S | X can play together without any problems. PC and Switch players, for example, cannot join the same games.

Nevertheless, there is cross-progression between all platforms . This means that you have access to your characters on all consoles and PC, as long as you have bought the game for different platforms. It is therefore possible, for example, to play on the PlayStation 4 first and then continue leveling the character on the Nintendo Switch on the go.
