How to avoid being bitten and infected (infection) in Project Zomboid

In Project Zomboid, anything can kill your character, but the most common cause of death is being bitten by a zombie. Luckily, these situations only happen if you're careless with the undead, but bites are always fatal and should therefore be avoided. In this guide, we have put together some good tips on how to do this.

How to use the environment

First, a zombie cannot bite a character from afar. Never let the dead sneak up on you from behind, as the chance of losing will be much higher. If you're exploring a new building, don't miss a single closed door. Danger can lurk in every unexplored room, so treat intelligence with all care.

If you want to make things a little easier for yourself, be sure to use the Keen Hearing skill when creating a character, which gives an increased perception radius. So the hero will be able to feel the danger at a greater distance, which means the chances of survival will increase.

Pay attention to cars. The technique is a natural defense against zombies, although it can break. A good option to secure the shelter is to destroy the stairs and board up the windows with boards. This will make it much harder for zombies to get inside.

Examine the available weapons. Knives can only deal damage at very close range, so using them against zombies is dangerous. Much more effective to get a spear. If the hero has the necessary talents, craft a stone knife. After that, there will be five attempts to make a spear from branches or planks. Such weapons are not very durable, but rather long and easy to create.

The main advice is to run away. Even if you manage to find a firearm - one or two ghouls are a huge danger. There can be a whole crowd of zombies in open spaces, so it is useless to fight them.

How to use clothes

Many of the problems that you will encounter in Project Zomboid are solved in the same way as in real life. Want to avoid being bitten? Protect your body. The more clothes on the character, the more difficult it is for zombies to get to him. Shorts, T-shirts, and other light outfits greatly increase the chances of not only getting bitten but also getting all sorts of damage.

When the clothes are torn, be sure to take materials from the zombies or the nearest house - this will help patch up the holes. Make sure every part of the character's body is covered, including the arms and head. A bicycle helmet or even a balaclava can prevent life-threatening injuries.

Is there a cure for zombie bites in Project Zomboid?

Short answer: no. You or the server owner can disable this setting, however, by default bites every time are 100% fatal. Open the sandbox menu and select the Zombie Behavior section. There you can change all the parameters in a way that is convenient for you.

If the character is bitten, the game is over. Over the next few days after the injury, the hero will be sick, worried, and eventually join the undead. There are several ways to make the most of your time:

  • Go on a dangerous campaign for valuable loot;
  • Explore as much of the map as possible;
  • Sacrifice yourself noisily to distract the zombies from the base;
  • Just die away from the base, so as not to become a threat.

If you do not want to turn the hero into a zombie, you can make him drink bleach, or ask friends to kill the character. Every attempt to survive makes sense - take care of the safety of the collected loot and hide it in a secluded place, for example, in drawers or cabinets. After the death of the protagonist, create a hero on the same server and return to the old base to collect items. So you can start a new game more prepared.

There is a trick that will allow you to save your favorite character in case of an unsuccessful outcome. Thanks to the backup, you can roll back your passage to an earlier save and try to go the other way. To make it work, you need to do a few preliminary steps:

  1. Navigate to "C:/Users/Zomboid/Saves/" and open the game mode folder. It can be Apocalypse, Survivor, Multiplayer, and others.
  2. Find the folder with the character's creation date. For example, "20-01-2022_03-40-42".
  3. Move it to another location. Now after death the player can delete the original folder and copy back the previously saved one.
  4. In the main menu, click "Load", select the appropriate save, and return to the game world.

Of course, you will lose some of the loot but save a life.

Since the game has become very popular, in the near future it is worth waiting for a lot of modifications that will change the existing rules. We managed to find two mods that change the lethality of bites. Zombie Cure Medical Cocktail [b41.65+] will add a new recipe for a medicine that can completely cure you of turning into a dead person. In Hydrocraft (Build 40), constant injections of zombie blood reduce disease progression.
