Baldur's Gate 3: Does it have cross-play and cross-save?

The long-awaited new game from Larian Studios for PC and consoles, Baldur's Gate 3, has finally left its early access phase to offer everyone its official final version. It is quite likely that if you want to jump into its world and share games with friends, you will first ask yourself a very common question: does this game have cross-play and cross-save functions?

In this entry of our guide, we are going to quickly answer whether Baldur's Gate 3 offers a cross-play system between platforms and also a cross-save system to be able to advance your game from any system you want to play.

Does Baldur's Gate 3 have cross-play?

  • The answer is that currently not, but it is in Larian's plans to add it.
  • That is, PC players and console players cannot play with each other or share multiplayer games at this time.
  • However, Larian's plan is to introduce cross-play between all platforms later.

In September 2023, the game developers confirmed in an interview that they have always had in mind adding cross-play to the game. "It is planned and although we have an idea of when it could be ready, we do not want to give a date until we are completely sure. " Therefore, at the moment we do not know when cross-play will arrive, but it is official that it will be included at some point.

It is important to note that since its release, PC and Mac players can share games through crossplay, regardless of whether they are playing the title from the Steam or GoG launcher.

Cross-play, in case you don't already know, is a function also known as cross-platform play that offers us the opportunity to play a multiplayer title with other users regardless of the platform each one uses.

Does Baldur's Gate 3 have cross-saves?

  • The answer is yes, Baldur's Gate 3 offers a unified cross-progression experience between its different platforms (PC and PS5).
Shared progression or cross-progress, also commonly called cross-save, is an officially confirmed feature by the Larian Studios team for Baldur's Gate 3.

In case you have any doubts, this is how the cross-save works in this game:

  • Your progression in Baldur's Gate 3: Transfers to all platforms linked to the same Larian account you use to play.
  • Your last 5 saved games: They will always be transferred to any platform you will play on later.

It is important to emphasize that, obviously, to enjoy the cross-progression features you need a Larian account that is correctly linked to your gaming platform (Steam, GoG, or PlayStation 5). As long as you use the same Larian account to play Baldur's Gate 3 on each platform, you should have no problem picking up where you left off.

The first time you start Baldur's Gate 3 you should receive an on-screen prompt about whether you want to activate cross-save. Make sure you check the box to activate this feature and then tap "OK." If for any reason this notice does not appear or you want to activate it later, you just have to go to the game options menu and in the "Save options" section, check the box titled "Cross save",

Later this year in 2023, when the game launches on Xbox Series X|S consoles , cross-save is also expected to be enabled for Microsoft machines.
