How to Shield Slide and Skate in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Link can once again use shields to slide across the ground as if he were skateboarding or surfing in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. We explain how to do it very easily!

A very fun mechanic that returns in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom from the previous game in the saga is the possibility of sliding on top of a shield as if we were skateboarding or surfing. Additionally, some new ways to use this scrolling mechanic have been added to this game. If you don't know how to skate on a shield, what button combinations to use, or what you should know about this mechanic, we explain everything below in this entry of our complete guide.

How to slide with a shield?

The shield sliding option is again available in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and can be performed in the same way as in Breath of the Wild. You just need to have a shield equipped and perform the following button combination :

  • Take out a shield: by pressing the ZL button on the controller.
  • Perform a jump: by pressing the X button.
  • While in the air: Quickly press the A button to climb on top of the shield.

If you do this combination correctly, Link will ride his own shield in the air and when landing on the ground he will glide quickly.

Logically, for this movement technique to be much more effective, it is recommended to do it on some type of slope. Link needs to gain some momentum to be able to glide for longer, so on flat ground, it doesn't make much sense to do this.

How to slide with a shield

Sliding with your shield is extremely useful, for example, when you want to descend a mountain in a short time. Keep in mind that while you are on the shield you will still be riding on top of it even if you jump. You can even jump, open the parasail, fly for a while, and fall back to the ground riding the shield.

Tricks and other details about shield sliding

We want to tell you some additional details about shield sliding. To start, remember that shields lose durability when you slide with them. This happens if you do it on mountainous or dirt terrain. If you slide through snow or desert sand, the shield cannot break.

On the other hand, in this game, you can combine your shields with certain Zonnan objects and gadgets. Two of the most interesting uses are these:

  • Combine the shield with a Slider: this way the shield will be much more resistant to wear and tear while you slide.
  • Combine the shield with a mining cart: if you do this, you can skate on rails as if you were grinding them with a skateboard (although the durability will degrade fairly quickly).

Now you know everything you need to slide like a master with your shields. Take advantage of this great mechanic whenever you want!
