Jujutsu Kaisen: Mappa under criticism, the anime soon on hiatus?

While season 2 is critically acclaimed, the behind-the-scenes story isn't as pretty. The employees could well go on strike!

Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen goes down in the history of manga and anime as one of the best arcs in history. With stunning animation and combat as well as episodes delivered every week, fans are in for a treat.

However, according to the employees and animators of the studio in charge of JJK, MAPPA, the working conditions are barely humane. The pressure against employees is more intense than ever and could well jeopardize season 2 of the anime. Will season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen be put on hold because of the working conditions at Studio MAPPA? We give you the answers.

Is Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 likely to be on hiatus because of MAPPA and its working conditions?

This is not the first time that the community and MAPPA employees have criticized the working conditions imposed by the studio. Increasingly short deadline: certain episodes are finished 1 to 2 hours before broadcast in Japan, according to certain sources. This tense flow is impossible to maintain for the presenters who speak on certain networks, notably Twitter .

While season 2 delivers more and more spectacular episodes, the animators requested a postponement of certain episodes, but the production team rejected them. The production committee refused a break and although for the moment nothing has been announced, season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen could well be on hiatus from the 18th episode. No official announcement for the moment, however, only rumors coming from Twitter and MAPPA hosts.

What is happening at MAPPA, why so much criticism?

According to a comment from a user on Reddit here is what has been happening for several years and even currently at MAPPA:

This situation is mainly the fault of Manabu Otsuka, CEO of Mappa, due to his greed for immediate growth. He wants the young Mappa studio to become very big very quickly, hence the acquisition of many popular titles. However, this overproduction is abnormal and too risky. Otsuka bypassed the production committees by securing exclusive rights to Chainsaw Man for Mappa, thereby depriving the studio of shared profits and financing the production alone, which is very risky.

MAPPA has not yet responded to the various complaints concerning the alleged working conditions, and the animators' comments on social networks.

This led to animator burnout, splitting the majority of them between Jujutsu Kaisen (JJK) and Chainsaw Man (CSM). Rather than working on JJK Season 2 as agreed, the animators were redirected to CSM Season 1, significantly shortening the time for JJK Season 2. Mappa's decision, not JJK's production committee, is to blame. This choice created an absurd delay, compromising the quality of the work. Otsuka and Mappa management are responsible, and their management must be questioned.

In short, MAPPA wants to make a place for itself in the industry and earn money to finance big projects, but in return the employees are drowning in work, and the way the studio treats its animators is unacceptable , even from a consumer's point of view.
