Deadlock is the new potential hit from Valve, the studio behind Half-Life and Counter-Strike (pictured on the cover). Here's how to try it.
Deadlock, Valve’s upcoming hero shooter-MOBA hybrid, nearly cracked the top 100 most-played games on Steam over the weekend, peaking at 16,947 concurrent players, according to SteamDB — a very high player count considering Valve has yet to publicly acknowledge the game’s existence. With that spike, CCU ranked at number 107 on the platform’s list of most-played titles on Sunday.
Earlier this year , playtest screenshots of Deadlock surfaced , confirming long-standing rumors surrounding the project. Previously known as Neon Prime and Citadel, Deadlock is reportedly the work of Dota 2 creator Icefrog.
Deadlock: How to Access the Game —
Valve appears to be steadily expanding the pool of testers for the game, as it is apparently allowing players to invite users from their Steam friends list to join in. This isn’t the first time the developer and publisher has done a soft launch like this – Dota 2 is the most famous example. It was available as a “closed beta” for a long time, though keys and invites were so readily available that anyone who wanted to play could. As always, Valve moves at its own pace and plays by its own rules, but if you want to get your first taste of Deadlock, all you need is a chat with someone on your friends list who’s already in the game to get in.
How is the game —
According to testers, the game is still using placeholder art assets in many places, so it doesn't look like it's ready to go public anytime soon. However, users have praised the title's mechanics and unique blend of MOBA mechanics with the hero shooter genre, so it looks like Valve is going in an interesting direction with this title. Since it seems to be leaning heavily into the MOBA aspect, Deadlock seems well-positioned to fill its niche in a genre that's becoming increasingly competitive with the arrival of Marvel Rivals and Concord. Speaking of which: Deadlock easily beats Concord's open beta in terms of numbers , which is a good sign. The MOBA shooter may not be the only project currently in Gabe Newell's pot: Half-Life 3 hopes were recently revived after fans spotted a previously unknown game in development at the studio.
