Windows 10, 8 and 7 without login: remove password - here's how

A password must be entered by default every time Windows 10 is started. You can also start Windows without a login and without a password, so that it logs in automatically. We'll show you how to do it here at OkayGotcha.


Note that the instructions only work with a local account. Before doing this, you should change your Microsoft account to a local account.


Windows 10, 8 and 7: Switch off password on startup and remove password


  1. Open the run dialog by pressing the key combination [ Windows ] + [ R ].
  2. Type in the following command netplwiz and confirm with [ Enter ].
  3. Uncheck “ User must enter user name and password ” and click “ Apply ” .
  4. If you do not see the box to tick, open the " Settings " with the key combination [ Windows ] + [ i ]. Navigate to Accounts > Sign In Options . Deactivates the first switch above ("Windows Hello login"). Now the box should be ready to be ticked.
  5. Finally you have to enter your password again (twice) and confirm it.

The next time Windows starts automatically including login.

Automatic Windows 10 login does not work

If the above method does not work, open this Microsoft website: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autologon.

  1. Download the " Autologon " tool .
  2. Unzip the ZIP folder and double-click on the " Autologon64.exe " file if you have a 64-bit Windows. Otherwise it is "Autologon.exe". This will start the program.
  3. Confirm the license conditions and enter your password for the Windows user account in the small window below.
  4. Click on the " Enable " button .
  5. Restarts Windows 10. Windows 10 now logs in automatically without entering a password.

If you log off or the computer is automatically switched to standby mode, you still have to enter the password to regain access to Windows - regardless of whether the query was previously removed. Your user account is also still password-protected when connecting over a network . Only the login on the PC takes place automatically on your user account.

Automatically log in to Windows without password - (registry hack)


  1. Opens the registry .
  2. Navigate to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon
  3. Double-click on the AutoAdminLogon entry and set the value to 1 .
  4. The DefaultUserName entry should contain the name of the user account with which Windows should automatically log in. In Windows 10 this can also be the email address you use to log in.

Windows 10, 8 and 7: When to boot directly without a login and password?

You should only deactivate the password request if you use the PC alone or within the family. With laptops, netbooks and tablets you should leave the password unchanged so that you are protected against theft and the associated data theft. You shouldn't forget the password.
