How to Resolve Game Save Issues in Parallels Desktop 15

Parallels Desktop is one of the best ways to work with Windows programs on Mac devices. This product makes it easy to transfer data from one system to another, however, some users still sometimes have problems with saving games. In this guide, we will detail how to fix this issue in Parallels Desktop 15.

Some Mac users may not be able to automatically save or resume games when using virtual machines. In this case, developer support almost always cannot help, since in most cases they do not provide for the ability to launch products through emulating applications.

By default, Parallels Desktop virtual machines are configured to share user profiles between Mac and Windows. This means that all desktop and document folders are on the Mac side and are redirected from the virtual machine via the shared folders feature. Folder redirection uses a UNC path and is not specific to the virtual machine.

The exact same mechanism is used to share user profiles on a Windows network. The problem with saves is that some applications do not handle UNC paths well and cannot read or write files.

To work around this issue, you need to turn off document folder sharing so that Windows uses the document folder on its own virtual drive. To do this, use the following instructions:

  1. Launch Parallels Desktop.
  2. Click on the Parallels icon in the Mac menu bar and choose Control Center.
  3. Click on the gear icon next to Windows to go to the VM Configuration.
  4. Uncheck Share Mac user folders with Windows.

By disabling this feature, Windows will use the local profile on the primary drive instead of the network one. Full path before unchecking:

Options> Sharing> Configure…> Documents.

Some games save data correctly in UNC paths, but cannot read saved games back. In this case, you need to move the files to the correct location where the game can detect them:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and go to \ psfHomeDocuments (this is where Mac documents visible from the virtual machine are stored).
  2. Find the game folder.
  3. Move the game folder to the correct directory.

The path to the required directory in Windows:

C: / Users / (Username) / Documents.
