Gears of War Series Goes To Unreal Engine 5

Studio The Coalition (Gears, formerly Gears of War) has announced that it is beginning to shift resources towards next-generation game development and will use Unreal Engine 5 for future projects.

In an open letter to the Gears community, the studio thanked its fans and said it is proud of the work it has done during the global pandemic, releasing Gears Tactics strategy for the Xbox Series X | S, as well as the recent Hivebusters expansion for Gears 5 late last year.

“With future games in mind, we are excited to begin shifting our resources towards next-generation development using Unreal Engine 5,” the studio wrote. "Gears of War has always been at the forefront of development with the Unreal Engine - as a breakthrough 720p game for the Xbox 360 and last year's 120FPS multiplayer update for the Xbox Series X | S - and we are thrilled to continue that tradition with many new developments on UE5. the coming years ".

What this means for Gears 5 as it stands, it will continue to receive new content with Operations 7 and 8 on the way, including new characters, new maps and new special events, as well as store updates and promised "exciting new content." More details on these transactions may be revealed next month when E3 2021 takes place, so stay tuned.

At the same time, The Coalition warned that the transition to the new engine is "a big undertaking", and tempered the hopes of fans that in the near future we will see the announcement of Gears 6, focused on next-gen, saying:

"We want to clarify that we will not be announcing any new projects or games for some time."

So whichever Gears game comes next, whether it's called Gears 6 or otherwise, won't be unveiled or released in the next year or two. However, this indicates that this will be a game exclusively for new consoles and will have nothing to do with the Xbox One.
