Connect Xbox controller to mobile phone: Here's how

In this Xbox controller guide, you'll learn:

  • How to connect an Xbox controller to an iPhone or Android smartphone
  • Which Xbox controllers can be connected via Bluetooth

Many cell phone games – for example, Fortnite, Minecraft, or Call of Duty: Mobile – can also be controlled with the controller. So that you can enjoy the games with the controller, we will tell you step by step how to connect an Xbox controller to your smartphone.

Which Xbox controllers can be connected to the cell phone via Bluetooth?

Not all Xbox controllers can be easily connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth. This only works with the Xbox wireless controllers that were introduced with the Xbox One S in 2016 (model number: 1708). This includes all Xbox One controllers that have been released since - including the Elite 2 and of course the new Xbox Series X/S controllers.

You can also identify the newer version of the controller because the plastic surrounding the Xbox button is one with the rest of the Xbox controller's surface. If the plastic around the Xbox button is slightly raised from the surface and is part of the controller with the bumpers (RB, RT, LB, LT), then unfortunately your controller does not support a Bluetooth connection to the phone.

Warning: Before attempting to connect the controller to a cell phone, make sure your controller has the latest firmware installed. For step-by-step instructions on how to update the Xbox controller, visit the Xbox support site.

Connect an Xbox controller to an Android smartphone

To connect your Xbox controller to an Android phone, you need at least Android 5.1.1 as the operating system. Follow these steps to pair the controller with your smartphone:

  1. Press and hold the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
  2. Press and hold the pair button on the top (between the bumpers) for 3 seconds - the Xbox button should now be flashing.
  3. Open the settings on the Android phone and go to Connections > Bluetooth and turn on Bluetooth there.
  4. Under "Available Devices" you should now see the "Xbox Wireless Controller".
  5. Tap on "Xbox Wireless Controller" to connect the controller to your phone - under "Paired devices" you should now see the connected controller.
Now you can just launch a game that has controller support and start playing.

Connect an Xbox controller to an iPhone or iPad

To connect a new Xbox Series X/S controller to your iPhone or iPad, you need at least iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5. iOS 13 or iPadOS 13 is also sufficient for the slightly older Xbox One controller with Bluetooth function. Follow the steps below to connect your Xbox controller to an Apple device:

  • Press and hold the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
  • Press and hold the pair button on the top (between the bumpers) for 3 seconds - the Xbox button should now be flashing.
  • Open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad and activate Bluetooth.
  • Under "Other Devices" you should now see the "Xbox Wireless Controller".
  • Tap on "Xbox Wireless Controller" to pair the devices together - the Xbox controller should now appear under "My Devices" and show as "Connected".
