Play Fortnite on iOS and iPadOS - Here's how it works via Xbox Cloud Gaming

Fortnite hasn't been available in Apple's App Store for a long time. Recently, however, there is another way to play Fortnite on the iPhone or iPad: via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

You don't install the game on your device, but stream Fortnite to your iPhone or iPad via the Safari browser.

Which devices are supported?

The following devices are officially verified by Microsoft for Xbox Cloud Gaming :

  • iPhones : iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPads: iPad Air (3rd Gen), iPad Air (4th Gen), iPad Pro 11 2nd Gen, iPad Mini 5th Gen, iPad (8th Gen)

We tested it ourselves on a newer 9th gen iPad and it worked without any issues, although it's not officially verified for Xbox cloud gaming as of yet.

Requirements for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Apple devices

To play Fortnite via Xbox Cloud Gaming on an iPhone or iPad you will need:

  • free Microsoft account
  • Safari browser
  • sufficiently fast internet connection
  • good wifi network
Microsoft recommends the following Internet speeds depending on the device :

  • iPhone: at least 10 Mbit/s
  • iPad: at least 20 Mbit/s

You should also use a 5 GHz WiFi network. While it will work with a 2.4GHz WiFi network, Xbox Cloud Gaming is not currently optimized for it.

If you want, you can of course also play Fortnite via Xbox Cloud Gaming via a mobile network. However, this consumes a lot of data and the gaming experience can vary depending on the location and connection quality.

How do I set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS and iPadOS?

Launch the Safari browser on your iPhone or iPad and open the Xbox.com/play website. Click on “Play for free” here. The next window will prompt you to add a shortcut to Xbox Cloud Gaming on your home screen:

  • Click on the Share icon in the browser and scroll down to the menu item "To Home Screen".
  • Select "Add to Home Screen" and click "Add".

Then open the cloud gaming shortcut on the home screen and log in with your Microsoft account. If you don't have an account yet, you can create a new one here. Once logged in, press play, and Fortnite will launch.

Can I play Fortnite with a controller on iPhone or iPad?

If you don't feel like touch control, you can connect a controller to your Apple device via Bluetooth and play Fortnite with it.

Alternative to Xbox Cloud Gaming: Geforce Now

In the future, there will probably also be the possibility to play Fortnite via the cloud provider Geforce Now. However, Geforce Now is still in closed beta on iOS devices and is not freely accessible.

If you want, you can be put on the waiting list on the official Geforce Now website. If you're lucky, you'll get access to the beta and test Fortnite on your iOS device via Geforce Now.
