The working version of iOS 16 will appear only in September, however, after the announcement at WWDC 2022, owners of new generation smartphones and tablets from Apple can freely download the latest beta updates to their device. Such a move is the next stage of testing, allowing a wide range of users to test the software.

Although Apple considers this version of the operating system stable enough for public testing, we recommend that you install iOS 16 on a spare device, as many applications may malfunction. It should be understood that Apple support is unlikely to help you until a working firmware is released.

How to Install the iOS 16 Public Beta

We recommend that you back up your data and files first. In this case, you can always roll back the changes if something goes wrong. This option is available on both Apple and PC devices.

Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad, go to the beta testing program page, then sign in or register. If you are enrolling in the program, simply follow the instructions on the screen. To do this, you only need an "Apple ID".

Once you've signed in and registered your device, go to iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 (depending on your device). In the second paragraph, click "Install profile". After that, confirm the selection in the dialog box.

After completing the previous paragraph, you will be prompted to go to "Settings". Do this and click View Profile.

Click the "Install" button in the top right corner. Enter the password and read the warning about the possible instability of the beta version. Tap "Allow" to start the installation process.

After preloading the files, you will be prompted to restart the device. Be sure to connect your iPhone or iPad to a power source as this step may take a while.

When the device restarts, open Settings and select General and then Software Update.

In the dialog box that opens, click Download and Install and enter your password when prompted. After the next reboot, your smartphone or tablet will run on the public beta version of iOS 16.

Subsequent updates to the operating system will be available in "Settings", in the section "Software Update". Use this feature to download the next OS versions.

New in iOS 16: Lock screen, maps, and hidden features

Apple announced iOS 16 during its annual WWDC 2022 developer conference in June. With this release of the software, users will be able to customize the lock screen, edit text messages in the Messages app, and use the new Wallet and Tap to Pay mobile payment features. In addition, the ability to share files via iCloud Family Sharing has been added.

Additional changes:

  • Appeared "Live notifications" on the lock screen;
  • Added functions for editing widgets, fonts, and filters;
  • Spatial audio in AirPods now uses the TrueDepth camera of the iPhone or iPad, adapting to the wearer;
  • Changed the design of the video player.
The official release of iOS 16 will take place in September 2022. With iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, macOS 13, tvOS 16, and HomePod 16 will also be available.
