All Muspelheim challenges in God of War: Ragnarok - how to get Surtr's Scorched Breastplate and Unquenchable Flame Shoulder

Trials of the Crucible (The Crucible) is an additional quest that opens upon arrival in the fiery realm of Muspelheim. Like the previous God of War game, Surtr offers a host of combat challenges to test your might. This guide includes information on how to complete each of Surt's challenges in God of War: Ragnarok and how to unlock Armor of the Undying Pyres, Chaos Flame, and other rewards.

Muspelheim is a recurring area from God of War (2018) and is very similar to its iteration in the last game. In order to start this side quest, you must first gain access to Muspelheim itself. Although players can explore part of this world during the main story, there is no way to return until you have collected both halves of Muspelheim's Yggdrasil Seed. They are located in Svartalfheim, but you can only get to them on different visits to the location in the story.

The giant Surtr is very fond of combat trials. When you arrive in this realm, you will unlock the side quest The Crucible, and will be able to participate in various challenges, the difficulty of which will increase as you progress.

Where to find the first half of Muspelheim's Seed

The first half of Muspelheim's Seed can be found right after completing Nidavellir in Chapter 2. She is located in Modvitnir's Rig in the west of Svartalfheim.

When you get to the beach, look to your right to see a high platform where the legendary chest is located. You can get to it by destroying opponents and climbing up. Throw the ax at the rotating lever to open the gate to the tall wooden platform.

Climb to the very top and kill the enemies here who will try to ambush you. Collect the first half of the Muspelheim Seed in the chest.

The second half of the Muspelheim Seed can only be obtained after you complete the tenth chapter and get a very important item that will allow you to get to the chest. Swim to the location Dragon Beach (Dragon Beach) in the east of Svartalfheim.

After taking out the enemies on the beach, look to the left to find a large wooden scaffolding with a chain that you can use to climb up to the ledge. There is an air vent here that you can drop your new tool into to create a mechanism to climb up to a higher platform.

On the ledge above, you will meet the spirit of the Elder Wayfarer, who will tell you a sad story about a treasure hunt with his son and give you the side quest "The Lost Treasure" (The Lost Treasure). Since he mentioned a treasure nearby, cross the chasm to a broken wooden bridge high above the beach.

Here you will find various rewards, but more important is the path to the left leading to the Alberich Hollow. Inside this tunnel are quite dangerous opponents. After defeating them, you can find a legendary chest. Go further to a huge pile of golden stones, to the left of which you will find a pot that you can use.

Return to the legendary chest and blast the golden stones to open the chest and get the other half of Muspelheim's seed.

After obtaining both halves of the seed, return to any Mystic Gate to unlock the journey to the Crucible in Muspelheim. Now you can complete Surt's challenges and earn rewards for crafting exclusive Muspelheim armor.

Crucible

Upon arriving at the Crucible, you'll find a large open arena with a gnome shop nearby. There is a chest in the pit, but it works differently than the others. It is associated with various tasks set by Surt.

You can find three smaller arenas east of the chest pit where you will find a large sword sculpture with a rune on it. Interact with him and you will be able to choose from several challenges in the arena. Each of them tests your combat abilities in different ways, setting new conditions for passing.

The first six trials of the Crucible can be completed in any order. You can choose a warm-up option to test out various equipment and abilities before jumping into the challenge itself.

Weapon Mastery. Rune "F"

  • Recommended level: 4-5;
  • Reward: Pauldron of the Unquenchable Flame (when fully charged with Permafrost, Heat, or Whirlwind, Kratos gains a shield that prevents loss of charge on the first hit), 100 Kratos XP, 100 Companion XP, 1000 Hacked Silver, 250 Divine Ashes.

You have to face 16 enemies, each with different elemental properties. You will have to change weapons quickly. Each enemy will have a shield, so be sure to use your Leviathan Ax on enemies with fire shields and Blades of Chaos on enemies with ice shields.

At the end, there will be a Nokken that heals the remaining enemies, so kill him first. The waves aren't too difficult, and as long as you use the right damage type, you'll have more than enough time to complete the challenge.

Flawless. Rune "F"

  • Recommended level: 4-5;
  • Reward: 100 Kratos XP, 100 Companion XP, 1000 Hacked Silver, 250 Divine Ash.

To complete this challenge, you need to defeat 15 enemies without taking any damage. Here you will always have to stay out of danger, so make the most of your ranged attacks. Most of these enemies either explode on death or attack from a distance. Don't forget about your ally too - use it to expand your combos.

At the end, you will encounter an opponent who will rush at the hero. You won't encounter too many enemies at once, but remember to constantly move, dodge, and hide.

Knockout (Ring Out). Rune "N"

  • Recommended level: 4-5;
  • Reward: Bracelets of Unquenchable Flame (increasing the accumulation rate of permafrost, heat, and whirlwind), 100 Kratos experience, 100 companion experience, 1000 chopped silver, 250 divine ash.

In this challenge, you will need to defeat 21 enemies that quickly regenerate health. The goal here is not to kill enemies in the usual way, but to throw them into the lava that flows through the arena.

Use weapon skills that repel enemies. Leviathan's Serpent's Snare, Chaos Blades' Scorched Earth, and Draupnir's Spear's Gale Force. Using Kratos' unarmed strike is also a great way to get rid of enemies.

Feed the Rift. Rune "N"

  • Recommended level: 4-5;
  • Reward: 100 Kratos XP, 100 Companion XP, 1000 Hacked Silver, 250 Divine Ash.

This task is more interesting in that killing enemies is only part of the solution to the problem. Each defeated enemy drops a ball of energy, which must be picked up and thrown into the main rift. There will be 2 waves: the first lasts 60 seconds and requires 6 points, and the second - 150 seconds and 15 points. Don't forget to shoot arrows at the wisps to make them vulnerable.

Focus on making your rolls count and look out for stronger enemies as their orbs are worth more. Orbs from normal enemies are worth 1 point each, and orbs from larger enemies are worth 2 points.

Population Control. Rune "R"

  • Recommended level: 5;
  • Reward: Girdle of the Unquenchable Flame (increasing the accumulation rate of permafrost, heat, and whirlwind), 100 Kratos experience, 100 companion experience, 1000 chopped silver, 250 divine ash.

As the name suggests, it is imperative that you keep the number of enemies under 4, but you also need to kill the elite enemy Bergsra. Try to group normal enemies together and use the Blades of Chaos to control the crowd.

Once you kill one or two of them, focus on Bergsra. You must kill him before the 5th enemy appears. If you quickly stun him with barehanded strikes or an axe, then attack grips will open, which will help to complete the process faster.

King of the Hill. Rune "R"

  • Recommended level: 5;
  • Reward: 100 Kratos XP, 100 Companion XP, 1000 Hacked Silver, 250 Divine Ash.

There will be three rounds in this challenge, each offering more rings, more enemies, and more time to kill them. The first wave is 1 ring and 35 seconds, the second wave is 2 rings and 60 seconds, and the third wave is 3 rings and 90 seconds.

It is important to keep moving in order to clear the arena of enemies. Use area attacks to deal with the enemies inside the ring. Apply skills to pull enemies into a ring. Use the spear to attack enemies at a distance. Be careful with stronger opponents and don't let the meter fill up.

The reward for 6 trials and combinations for the center sword

After completing 6 trials, you will complete the request "Crucible". Go back to the chest to get the Flame of Chaos and experience. After that, a new giant flaming sword will appear in the central arena next to the forge. This is where the real fun of Muspelheim begins.

This unlocks one additional challenge each on the previous three swords. Accordingly, in addition to the six initial trials, you will receive three more and six final trials on the main sword. Each sword has a specific rune, which you can see below:

reward for 6 trials and combinations for the center sword

To unlock the final challenges, you will have to complete 2 challenges with different swords. The six final challenges can be obtained using the following combinations:

  • Sword 1 (left) + sword 2 (middle): Endurance final test - FN;
  • Sword 3 (Right) + Sword 2 (Middle): Final Trial "Formidable Enemies" - RN;
  • Sword 1 (left) + sword 3 (right): Shieldbreaker final challenge - FR;
  • Sword 3 (Right) + Sword 1 (Left): Phantom Final Trial - RF;
  • Sword 2 (Middle) + Sword 1 (Left): Ring of Fire final challenge - NF;
  • Sword 2 (Middle) + Sword 3 (Right): The final test "Massacre" - NR.

Rampage. Rune "F"

  • Recommended level: 6;
  • Reward: 100 Kratos XP, 100 Companion XP, 4 Asgardian Ingots, 2500 Hack Silver, 250 Divine Ash.

We go to sword 1 (left).

To pass this challenge, Kratos must destroy at least 20 enemies in 150 seconds. To do this is quite simple if you use the most destructive skills of the hero.

Again, remember to use elemental advantages before focusing on elite enemies and help from your ally. In order not to waste time in vain, you can ignore the elite enemies and switch to the weaker ones.

Vampirism (Health Steal). Rune "N"

  • Recommended level: 6;
  • Reward: 100 Kratos XP, 100 Companion XP, 3 Luminous Alloys, 2500 Hacked Silver, 250 Divine Ashes, Molten Embers.

Go to sword 2 (middle).

In this quest, Kratos will take constant damage, but he will be able to replenish health through attacks. There will always be enough weaker enemies to keep the health pool in an acceptable shape. Just make sure you don't get caught off guard by the crowd and always be ready to block, parry, and dodge stronger opponents.

You must destroy 22 opponents. At the end, there will be enemies that can heal allies, so try to kill them first.

After completing the challenge on sword 1 (left) and sword 2 (middle), return to the main for a new challenge.

Endurance. Runes "FN"

  • Recommended level: 6;
  • Reward: Scorched Breastplate of Surt (wounding the attacking enemy, Kratos deals additional damage to him), 1000 Kratos experience, 1000 companion experience, 20000 chopped silver, 1000 divine ash, 1 burning coals, 3 smoking coals.
You need to kill 99 enemies. With each wave, it becomes more and more difficult to do this. You will meet simple opponents and a few elite fighters. Healing gear might come in handy.

As usual, focus on pesky support and ranged enemies first before taking on elite opponents. Always be on the move and watch out for flank attacks.

Fuse (Kill Fuse). Rune "R"

  • Recommended level: 6;
  • Reward: 100 Kratos experience, 100 companion experience, 4 petrified bone, 2500 chopped silver, 250 divine ash, 1 ember.

We go to the sword 3 (right).

Your job is to keep the timer going by killing the enemies. At the beginning of the battle, you will receive 30 seconds. The goal is to kill 22 monsters. The elimination of each enemy brings 5-10 seconds. Don't be afraid to turn things around with ranged and melee attacks.

Eliminate support enemies first. Start with the nearest opponents, and leave the distant ones for last. Try to kill monsters as quickly as possible.

Completed three new trials with three ranged swords. Choose the fastest and easiest for you on these three swords. Combine runes to unlock new final challenges. For example, they are "Weapon Mastery" on sword 1 (left), "Saturation of the gap" on sword 2 (middle), and "Number Control" on sword 3 (right).

Complete Sword Trial 2 (Medium) and return to the center for a new trial. You get a combination: sword 3 (right) + sword 2 (middle).

Terrible Enemies (Boss Rush). Runes "RN"

  • Recommended level: 6;
  • Reward: Surtr's Scorched Girdle (Kratos takes less damage and is more resistant to knockdowns by doing basic attacks and using skills), 1000 Kratos XP, 1000 Companion XP, 20000 Hacked Silver, 1000 Divine Ash, 1 Molten Embers, 3 Smoldering Embers.
One of Muspelheim's toughest challenges. Be sure to properly prepare, be it skills or equipment. You will need to kill 5 elite enemies one at a time.

It all starts with the Midgard Traveler. Just dodge his red attacks and parry whenever possible to counterattack.

Next up is the Fierce Stalker, a pesky enemy that can attack both from a distance and up close. Watch out for her attack, and if you get behind her, watch out for her back kicks.

The Dark Elf Warrior is an elusive target and loves to scatter explosives in his path. Dodge any ranged attacks and strike whenever you can. Just don't stay in one place for too long or you might go blind.

Next up is the Light Elf Swordsman. He does long chains of attacks with his sword, so block, parry, and prevent him from healing with his shield strike.

The last opponent is the Einherja Captain. It is recommended to be more aggressive as he can teleport around the arena. So hit him whenever you can, block his attacks, and don't let the birest effect build-up.

Shield Breaker. Runes "FR"

  • Recommended level: 6;
  • Reward: 1000 Kratos XP, 1000 Companion XP, 20000 Hacked Silver, 1000 Divine Ashes, 2 Hot Embers, 3 Smoldering Embers, 1 Smoldering Ember.

We carry out the test on sword 1 (left) and sword 3 (right).

This fight will require you to eliminate normal opponents before you can attack an elite enemy. Toward the end, the Einherja Captain and the Stalker will appear. Regular enemies will spawn in groups of 3-4, so deal with them quickly and then switch to elite enemies until new ones spawn.

Shield Breaker. Runes "FR"

Shield Breaker. Runes "FR"

Use your ally to thwart any attacks while you are killing regular enemies. Use Kratos ' Spartan Valor ability to heal himself in case of an emergency.

Phantom (Phantom). Runes RF

  • Recommended level: 6;
  • Reward: 1000 Kratos XP, 1000 Companion XP, 150000 Hacked Silver, 1500 Divine Ashes, 3 Hot Embers, 2 Smoldering Embers, 1 Smoldering Ember.

We perform the test on sword 3 (right) and sword 1 (left).

At this stage, you will encounter a fire Phantom - this is a spherical creature. Focus on hitting the orb to increase its stun gauge, especially when it's glowing. It is best to use ranged attacks. This will stun the creature. Deal enough damage and he will retreat, allowing you to turn your attention to the glowing purple pillars that are the true targets.

In between, he will also call for help from other enemies, so get rid of them as quickly as possible. Repeat this for the three pillars and you will pass the test.

Ring of Fire. Runes "NF"

  • Recommended level: 6;
  • Reward: Scorched Bracers of Surt (Kratos takes less damage and becomes more resistant to knockdowns with basic attacks and skills), 1000 Kratos XP, 1000 Companion XP, 20000 Hacked Silver, 1000 Divine Ash, 1 Molten Embers, 2 Smoking Embers, 3 embers.

We perform the test on sword 2 (middle) and sword 1 (left).

Who knew a key battle royale element would appear in God of War: Ragnarok? The main destructive aspect of this ordeal is going outside the ring. Always stay inside the moving circle to avoid extra damage.

Ring of Fire. Runes "NF"

Ring of Fire. Runes "NF"

In this challenge, you will need to defeat 15 enemies. Count on your ranged skills to take down enemies from afar. Avoid rash combos that can take you out of the circle. There is also a poisonous totem in the arena that the circle can bring you closer to, so don't forget to freeze it with your axe.

Massacre (Onslaught). Runes "NR"

  • Recommended level: 6;
  • Reward: Muspelheim Fortitude Amulet Enchantment, 1000 Kratos EXP, 1000 Companion EXP, 20000 Hacked Silver, 1000 Divine Ash, 2 Molten Embers, 1 Smoldering Embers, 3 Smoldering Embers.

We perform the test on sword 2 (middle) and sword 3 (right).

You must survive 300 seconds in the battle with endless enemies in the central part of the arena. Stay inside the ring and kill enemies as needed, but don't play too aggressively. Enemies don't take damage from lava, so it's best to play defensively. Use health-restoring equipment and abilities.

Fight from a distance and keep dodging. Your ally will also help a lot. If health crystals drop outside of the ring, it's worth running out to grab them, as you'll heal more than you take fire damage.

These are all 15 trials of Muspelheim. Completing the final trials also unlocks the Trials by Fire trophy.
