In terms of playing time, God of War Ragnarök has increased significantly compared to God of War (2018). And the scope of sideline activities has also increased compared to the first part. At this point, we give you an overview of the duration of the story and all side activities in the action-adventure.

God of War Ragnarok: playing time and scope

Game time of God of War Ragnarok

We spent a lot of time in the various realms of the world tree for testing God of War Ragnarök and well beyond. If you just focus on the game's story, you'll need 20-25 hours of gameplay before the credits roll across the screen. That's a bit longer than God of War (2018), which at 20 hours also had a considerable playing time.

In order to complete the game 100% with all side activities, it took us about 53 hours in total. If you play on one of the higher difficulty levels, you will certainly be busy for up to 60 hours. By the way, for the start of the game, we have put together 7 tips for you that would have helped us a lot beforehand.

Scope and size of the game world

In God of War Ragnarök, you are in all nine realms of the world tree. These include Midgard, Asgard, Jotunheim, Svartalfheim, Alfheim, Vanaheim, Helheim, Niflheim, and Muspelheim. Some realms are significantly larger than others and there is more to find or hidden areas to discover.

The whole game world will only open up to you after the story ends since you will then have unlocked all the equipment and skills to enter previously inaccessible areas. God of War Ragnarök presents itself here as a true Metroidvania. So backtracking is worth it.

You can't miss anything. We recommend that you focus mainly on the story for now. After the credits, you can continue to move freely in the game world and complete all other activities. There are also challenges that only unlock after the main story

There are countless side missions throughout the game called Favors. In addition, as in the predecessor, you can again hunt Odin's ravens and solve the riddles of the Norn chests. Side activities include the following things:

  • Countless collectibles and artifacts.
  • Norn Chests, Legendary Chests, and Chests containing Resources and Hacksilver can be found in every corner of the game world.
  • 47 side missions, some of which only unlock after completing the story.
  • 10 treasure maps for finding buried treasure.
  • 20 different armor sets for Kratos and different outfits for Atreus.
  • New and more skills in combat.
