Exploring the nine worlds in God of War: Ragnarok, you will constantly find various supplies: materials, ingredients, and money. All these resources can be used to improve the equipment of the blacksmith. The maximum gear upgrade level in the game is 9. This is several levels more than in God of War (2018).
God of War: Ragnarok has a plethora of new items that together can create different builds, but the key to keeping them viable is to upgrade them.
One of the best ways to get extra resources for upgrades is to complete side quests. Here they are called "Requests" (Favors). Upgrading may require unique materials, you can get them by defeating powerful opponents. From regular named opponents, you can get additional upgrades for weapons. Such enemies can be encountered while exploring the open world.
How to upgrade weapons, armor, and other items
First of all, find a blacksmith - you can meet Brok and Sindri in every major hub. They will often appear during story locations, but you can visit them more often if you need to upgrade equipment. You can also create new items, they are garbage cans with an anvil icon with a hammer.
In the blacksmith menu, you will see four tabs (at the bottom of the screen): "Weapons", "Armor", "Special Items" and "Sell". Use gamepad buttons [L2 / R2] to switch tabs. You will mainly use the Weapons and Armor tabs.
Choose the weapon or armor you want to upgrade. Press the [L2 / R2] keys to select the level you want to upgrade the item to. If you have enough resources, then press the [Square] button to buy an upgrade.
What you need to improve each type of equipment
Different equipment requires different resources. There are many different types of equipment - some require materials that are easy to get from simple enemies or found in small chests, while others require collectibles that only appear after certain actions.
- Leviathan Axe: Requires Frozen Flames to upgrade;
- Blades of Chaos: Requires Flames of Chaos to upgrade;
- Weapon Parts: Requires chopped silver and crafting materials;
- Shields: Requires chopped silver and crafting materials;
- Shield Parts: Requires chopped silver and crafting materials;
- Sword: Requires Folkwang Bar to upgrade;
- Chest Armor, Hip Armor, and Arm Armor: Requires Hacksilver and crafting materials;
- Amulets: Requires "Dew of Yggdrasil" items to upgrade;
- Enchantments and Relics: Cannot be upgraded;
- Accessories: Requires Beast Fragments and Beast Bones.
