Sonic Frontiers: How to get purple coins and what they are for

We show you what are the methods to obtain more purple coins in Sonic Frontiers and in what you can use this curious and precious special currency.

Purple coins are one of the many items that we can collect throughout the worlds of Sonic Frontiers as we explore every corner of the islands. In this case, we are talking about a special and quite scarce currency that may cause you doubts in your first hours of play. Do you want to know how to get more or where they appear? Wondering where you can use these coins? If so, keep reading this entry in our guide where we explain all the related details.

How do you get purple coins?

Officially there are two methods in Sonic Frontiers by which you can get purple coins in your game, they are the following:

  • Find them hidden around the islands: There are many places where you can find these coins in groups of 3 to 5, approximately. They are usually in places like ruins, hard-to-reach areas, and more.
  • Obtain them during a Starfall: During this random event in which stars fall from the sky, it is possible to randomly obtain large amounts of purple coins.

Find purple coins

Find purple coins

As you can imagine, the first method we have mentioned (finding purple coins by yourself) is the "slowest" and requires more dedication. Your amount of purple coins will increase little by little when looking for them since there are never too many together and you have to explore each scene very well to find them.

  • As a recommendation, we advise you to also take into account the places where lost kocos appear since these coins usually appear near these creatures.
  • So, don't forget to dig deep into ruined buildings, portal locations, challenge sites, and more secluded nooks and crannies.

Get purple coins in meteor showers

If you really want to earn a lot of purple coins in a short time, then you should be very attentive to the meteor showers.

  • These showers are a type of nightly event that occurs randomly and is used to reset the island's guardians and items so that they appear again.
  • While a meteor shower is underway, you can collect stars that fall from the sky to play a kind of prize wheel.
  • As you collect stars that have fallen from the sky, you will see that the wheel spins and different symbols appear that may have a prize.
  • Although these prizes are random, if you are lucky enough to get three purple coins standing on the spinner, you will instantly get 50 coins for your inventory.
  • If you're even luckier and the roulette symbols land on the three yellow star shields, you'll get up to 200 purple coins at once.
This is undoubtedly the best way to increase your number of purple coins, although you will need to have the luck of your course, of course.

What are the purple coins for?

When you pick up your first purple coin in Sonic Frontiers, you get some informational text telling you that these coins are used in purple portals, but you probably have no idea what the game is referring to by this. Actually, it's simple, the purple coins have only one purpose and that is to be able to play the fishing mini-game.

  • That is, the purple coins are used in the hidden portals of the fishing areas.
  • On each island, you can find a portal that takes you to a fishing area with Big the Cat.
  • When visiting a fishing area, you will have to spend purple coins to be able to use the rod.
  • In exchange for the use of purple coins, you will be able to catch fish and items to obtain tokens.
  • The tokens can then be traded with Big to purchase various treasures.
The truth is that Big's treasure shop is very useful to increase Sonic's power since you can buy lost seeds or kocos, but not only that since you can also acquire portal pieces or memory fragments if you are lacking them, for instance.

Therefore, and ultimately, the purple coins are tremendously useful to advance faster in the game by taking advantage of the fishing mechanics. Do not miss the opportunity and collect them all whenever you cross them on your way!
