Like A Dragon: Ishin!, guide and tricks to get started

Like A Dragon: Ishin! sees the return of Kazuma Kiryu as the protagonist. Only this time his name is Ryoma Sakamoto or Saito Hajime, and he is an influential samurai of the Edo period of Japanese history.

The Yakuza series is notorious for its steep learning curve, but there are better ways to tackle it than others. Here are our tips and tricks to get you started Like A Dragon: Ishin! in the right way.

Talk to everyone

While there is only one area to explore, there are so many things to do in Kyo Town. There are side quests to find, relationships to build, and mini-games to discover. Not only does this add to some of the best storytelling in the game, but completing bonds with other characters will give you important items, unlock things for sale, introduce fast travel points, give you new abilities, and even pets for your second home. Relationships will also ask you to go back to the same person many times, so it's good to start them as soon as possible.

Don't specialize in one style

There are four fighting styles – Brawler, Gunman, Swordsman, and Wild Dancer. As you play, you'll earn orbs for specializing in skills, as well as for general training. However, the main circle of each wheel will give you health boosts and more that will apply to all styles. Since the fights are locked to one style, it's good to have a general basis, even if you'll mostly be using the same style.

Unlock skills

There are three dojos in Kyo that can help you boost your skills and can be extremely helpful. Some styles don't even have basic skills like grappling, dodging, and guarding until you unlock them at dojos. The dojo for Brawler style is to the right of Teradaya Inn in Fushimi, the one for Wild Dancer and Swordsman is near the Rakunai altar, and the one for Gunman style is east of Umekojicho, Rakugai.

Don't waste Virtue

You will receive Virtues for virtually everything you do in Like A Dragon: Ishin! and you can use it to unlock important buffs. Some of the first things you'll want to unlock are an inventory expansion and running boost. This will help you escape faster when you run into some bad guys on the street.

Choose your soldiers carefully

Once you join the Shinsengumi you will unlock special abilities that you can use in combat. These are very powerful skills in battle and you will need them for later battles. You can load them and add them to the Soldier menu, and you should be careful which ones you choose. Some soldiers will only boost attacks of certain styles, so make sure they're linked to the one you want to boost. However, soldiers are special, and some will even give you a fourth skill. Make sure you always have one equipped in the dedicated slot to maximize your abilities.

Choose your soldiers carefully

Shoot full force

Unlike most Yakuza, Like A Dragon: Ishin! it will allow you to use a pistol with unlimited shots. You can use any weapon in most fights, but there are certain scenarios where you'll want to whip out your gun right away. With large groups of enemies, the pistol not only allows you to shoot from a distance but also has the shortest animation and can dodge at will. The pistol is not very effective against armored enemies, but when you don't see any around you, feel free to be Rambo.
