Guide to weapons in Resident Evil 4 (2023)

How to get the best shotguns, pistols, knives, sniper or assault rifles, rocket launchers, and more

Resident Evil 4 Remake features a wide arsenal of weapons, and this is not surprising: compared to the previous three parts, the fourth contains much more combat scenarios, enemies, bosses, and other difficulties that simply cannot be overcome without a good “barrel”. In my opinion, the best weapon set for any survivalist will be the Red9 pistol, the Riot shotgun, and the Stingray rifle, which will help in different situations.

Guide to weapons in Resident Evil 4 (2023)

Some weapons you will find when exploring the game world, and others you can buy in a merchant's shop for pesos or spinels. It's easy to get confused, but don't worry - below we tell you how to get each weapon in Resident Evil 4 Remake, as well as which weapons are best to keep in your inventory.

The best weapons in Resident Evil 4

In my opinion, the best weapons for each category are:

  • The best knife is a combat knife
  • Best Pistol - Red9 (with stock)
  • Best Shotgun - Riot Gun
  • Best Rifle - Stingray
  • Best Submachine Gun - LE 5
  • Best revolver - Killer7
  • Best Special Weapon - Rocket Launcher

Of course, I do not mean that you should have all these weapons with you at once: the inventory simply cannot withstand this. Instead, choose the weapon types you like the most, and keep an eye on what ammo is currently available.

In Resident Evil 4 Remake, there are a total of 22 types of weapons, not counting disposable throwable items such as a hand grenade, heavy grenade, flash grenade, cobbler knife. The easiest way to divide weapons into categories depending on the "consumed" ammunition, since having two (even worse - three) weapons for one ammunition in a case is a waste of inventory space.

All knives in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Knives in Resident Evil 4 Remake are used primarily for defense, as a means of parrying attacks, as well as for finishing off stunned opponents. There are several types of temporary knives in the game that break after a few uses - for example, a kitchen knife and a shoe knife. However, below we have listed only those melee weapons that can be improved and repaired at the merchant, as well as placed in storage.

Combat knife (starter)

  • Location: available by default.
  • Can be unlocked in the chapter: 1.

The simplest of durable knives that you will use for half the game or so. This combat knife is available to Leon by default. You can repair and upgrade weapons at the merchant, and durability should definitely be a priority for upgrades.

Combat knife

  • Location: Reward for defeating Krauser.
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 14.
The combat knife can be picked up from the corpse of Krauser after defeating the boss in the fourteenth chapter. While slightly less durable than Leon's Combat Knife, this weapon deals far more damage per hit. Without upgrades, this knife matches Leon's fully upgraded combat knife.

Primal Knife

  • Location: Challenge Reward Store / Extra Content (1000 CP).
  • Can be unlocked in Chapter: At the end of the game if certain conditions are met.
Primal Knife is a reward for finding and destroying all Clockwork Keepers, after which it becomes available for purchase in the main menu of the shop for 1000 CP. In a separate guide, we told you where to look for all clockwork keepers.

All pistols in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Pistols are the backbone of any weapon system, and Resident Evil 4 is no exception. This type of weapon has the most ammo in the game, and in the right hands, it can be quite powerful. Moreover, the remake features 5 types of pistols at once, which differ in efficiency and power.

SG-09 R (starter pistol)

  • Location: available by default.
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 1.

The SG-09 R starting pistol is quite good in the early stages of the game, but you will need to replace it as soon as possible since all the other examples in this category are many times better.

chastener

  • Location: merchant's shop (5 spinels)
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 2.
Available upon first encountering a merchant in the Trade section, the Punisher costs 5 spinels and focuses on penetration and accuracy, punching through opponents, and is compatible with the Laser Sight attachment.

Red9

  • Location: abandoned boat on the lake.
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 4.
After killing Del Lago and gaining full access to the lake and motor boat, move on it to the almost sunken boat in the center of the lake. Look inside it for a case with a Red9 pistol, all the characteristics of which are aimed at inflicting huge damage. The balance is achieved at the expense of the worst return, but it can be adjusted with additional inserts.

Blacktail

  • Location: merchant's shop (24,000 pesos)
  • Unlocked in chapter: 7
Upon reaching the castle, you can buy a new pistol from the merchant. In fact, it does not stand out from the rest, it just looks like an improved version of the starting pistol, with a faster rate of fire. It also takes up much less space in the case - a 2x2 square.

Matilda

  • Location: merchant's shop (10 spinels).
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 9.
The Matilda is another pistol that can be traded in the Trade menu at the beginning of Chapter 9 for 10 spinels. After going through the labyrinth in the courtyard of the castle. This weapon is perceived as a kind of intermediate stage between pistols and submachine guns. That is, it is a rapid-fire pistol that fires bursts of three bullets, but after installing the butt.

All shotguns in Resident Evil 4 Remake

There are three shotguns (guns) in RE4 Remake, and you get the first one literally at the beginning of the game. In the arsenal, there must be at least some kind of gun or shotgun capable of inflicting huge damage in close combat. Moreover, there is a lot of ammunition for weapons of this type. Yes, and there are enough opponents trying to grab Leon close.

Shotgun W-870

  • Location: One of the houses in the village square at the start of the game.
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 1.
The first shotgun can be found during a long sequence in the village square when you are trying to fight off a large wave of lunatics. It hangs on the wall of the top floor of a house in the northeast corner of the village square. You can pick it up after the combat scenario, since the game will allow you to search all the buildings and collect loot.

Rebel (Riot)

  • Location: merchant's shop (28,000 pesos)
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 6.
The Rebel shotgun is sold in the Trade shop and will be available in the sixth chapter after the episode in which you defend the house with Luis. Be sure to buy it - it deals higher damage and has a larger range than the model above. It literally punches holes in enemies.

Stryker

  • Location: merchant's shop (38,000 pesos)
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 10.
After you play an episode as Ashley in the castle and control Leon again, a new high-damage shotgun will appear in the merchant's assortment. Despite the deadly danger, the Stryker actually has a relatively shorter range, which is the main limitation in the use of a shotgun. However, its wide shot spread makes it an incredibly powerful crowd-control tool.

All rifles in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Rifles are kind of the complete opposite of shotguns. They are designed for long-range shooting and hitting vulnerable spots - heads or unprotected parasites. They can be supplemented with various optical sights, which will make it even more difficult to operate at close range, but will allow you to destroy enemy skulls from medium and sometimes long distances.

SR M1903

  • Location: merchant's shop (12,000 pesos)
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 2.
The first rifle in the merchant's shop will appear after escaping with Luis. It comes with a free sight, which you can completely refuse if you wish. The weapon is designed for long-range combat, and, despite its low rate of fire, it literally destroys enemy skulls. At the same time as the rifle, the crossbow is unlocked, but the choice in this case is in favor of the CP M1903.

Stinger

  • Location: merchant's shop (30,000 pesos)
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 7.
Arguably the best rifle on the market, the Stingray combines high power, accuracy and a good rate of fire. If you like a conventional bolt action rifle, ditch it as soon as possible, as it's a better weapon overall. Most importantly, it deals huge damage when it hits the weak spots of the enemy.

CQBR assault rifle

  • Location: South Castle Library, behind the cubic device lock.
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 10.

After playing the episode for Ashley, who moves around the castle with a lantern, and then regaining control over Leon, go to the library and climb the stairs to the mezzanine, which you did for the girl. This is in the southern part of the room (there will be monsters in knightly armor). Use the cube on the hole under the painting right after climbing the stairs to find the only assault rifle in the game. Despite decent power, CQBR is actually not that good, as it consumes rather rare rifle ammunition, and bullets often fly "into milk". It is difficult to conduct aimed fire, so it is better to stop at Stingray.

All automata in Resident Evil 4 Remake

Several submachine guns that you can find in Resident Evil 4 Remake deal high damage, but have high recoil and spread, so the bullets fly literally in all directions. However, such weapons can prove useful in crowd control, as an alternative to a pistol or a shotgun.

TMP

  • Location: merchant's shop (10,000 pesos)
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 3.
The first submachine gun is sold by the merchant from the third chapter, after meeting with Mendez in the elder's mansion. The TMP is difficult to handle but has a good rate of fire. The disadvantage can be leveled by an appropriate installation.

LE 5

  • Location: Refrigerator factory freezer.
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 13.
This submachine gun is located in the freezer of the Regeneradon Factory, and in order to obtain it, you will have to solve an optional power distribution puzzle. LE 5 is located in the north freezer, in the cold room where you'll encounter the oddly flexible and seemingly indestructible regeneradon. Make sure to apply power to this part of the object and then solve the puzzle as shown in the screenshot to access this more controlled and reliable alternative to TMP.

Chicago machine gun

  • Location: Challenge Reward Store / Extra Content (1000 CP).
  • Can be unlocked in the chapter: when certain conditions are met.
If you beat the main game on normal difficulty, the "Professional" mode will open. Complete the game again and achieve an A rank or higher to complete the challenge and gain access to the Prohibition-era submachine gun.

All revolvers in Resident Evil 4 Remake

There are three revolvers in Resident Evil 4 Remake. All but the most resilient and experienced players will have to make do with just two varieties, as the third is only unlocked after passing a serious and difficult skill test. Revolvers are powerful weapons with high recoil and massive damage. And there is also extremely little ammunition for them, so it is best to leave revolvers for boss fights.

Butterfly

  • Location: merchant's shop (38,000 pesos).
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 7.
The first revolver is called "Butterfly". In fact, many players unnecessarily devalue it. You can buy it from a merchant for 38,000 pesos. You will also receive a free Revolver Ammo crafting recipe. Buy it right away as it will cost you more later.

Killer7

  • Location: merchant's shop (77,700 pesos)
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 13.
Released in the shop after clearing the castle and taking a boat ride to the factory pier, the Killer7 is a much more manageable revolver with high armor penetration and a built-in laser sight. In general, it is the best alternative to Butterfly.

killer

  • Location: Challenge Reward Store / Extra Content (1000 CP).
  • Can be unlocked in the chapter: when certain conditions are met.
Like the Chicago Machine Gun or Primal Knife, the Assassin is another weapon (in this case, a revolver) that can only be unlocked by completing a specific challenge. You will not be able to get it until at least the third playthrough of the game, since you need to complete the "Professional Agent" challenge: complete the game on "Professional" mode without using the bonus weapon.

All special weapons in Resident Evil 4 Remake

The two weapons below are an exception to the general concept of Resident Evil 4 Remake. Each requires unique ammo. As a rule, they are less than ammunition for weapons of other types.

Crossbow

  • Location: merchant's shop (10,000 pesos).
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 2.
The Crossbow is a silent, reusable crossbow that spawns in the Merchant's Shop along with the CP M1903 Sniper Rifle after escaping to Luis in Chapter 2. In my opinion, this is the most useless weapon in the game, although the crossbow is silent, and may be suitable for stealth passage. The bolts don't deal much damage, and while you can attach mines to them later to increase the effect, the bolt is permanently destroyed by such a shot. And there are few such shells in the district.

rocket launcher

  • Location: merchant's shop (80,000 pesos)
  • Can be unlocked in chapter: 4.
After killing Del Lago on the lake, the weapon will become available for sale in the merchant's shop. However, it all looks like one big trick, since you get a disposable weapon, and you will not find ammo for it anymore. In fact, it will allow you to destroy any boss with the passage of which you have difficulty. However, if you start the second playthrough, a rocket launcher with infinite ammo will appear on sale. But this is a completely different
