In the second chapter, you will have to return your equipment, after which the hero will meet the merchant for the first time. Explore the Valley and fight more enemies to find the hexagonal eagle emblem. It is located above the building to the right of the entrance.
Go back to the merchant and use the emblem at the locked door. You need to rotate it like this:

To solve this puzzle, you need to go up to the second floor and read the book. But you can save time by setting the following symbols (from left to right):
