Resident Evil 4 Mercenary Mode Character Guide (2023)

How to unlock all characters for a special mode, their unique abilities and equipment, practical tips

Resident Evil 4 Remake brings back the fan-favorite Mercenaries mode that first appeared in the original game. The principle of the mode is quite simple: all that is required of the players is to survive and destroy about one and a half hundred opponents attacking in large groups.

The best thing about it all is that the Mercenaries mode allows players to take on the role of Leon and the other characters in the game. Each of the heroes has unique equipment and offers a different style of play, which is why you are forced to completely change the approach to passing each map. Below we have collected information about each character for you!

Resident Evil 4 Mercenary Mode Character Guide (2023)

Leon

When you first launch the Mercenaries mode, the only available character will be Leon. Most likely, playing for him will be as comfortable as possible for you, since he acts in almost the same way as in the main story campaign. Among all the characters, he will have the most balanced equipment, and he can use melee moves that you are probably already used to.

Starting inventory:

  • Pistol SG-09
  • laser sight
  • 48 pistol rounds
  • police gun
  • 18 shotgun shells
  • Semi-automatic rifle "Scat"
  • Powerful sight
  • 14 rifle rounds
  • Combat knife
  • First Aid Spray

Leon is the only character with a shotgun and this weapon will be your main defense against elite enemies like Dr. Salvador. Try to save shotgun shells for bosses and difficult situations when enemies corner you and you need to urgently fight your way to freedom. You can also use it strategically during Mayhem mode to increase your rating, as each pellet that hits an enemy will earn extra points.

If you prefer the standard crosshair, you can attach and remove the laser sight from the SG-09 pistol. However, this must be done at the beginning of each match.

Mayhem Mode

Leon's Mayhem mode is as simple as it gets - while it's active, the hero moves faster and deals more damage. For standard enemies, most SG-09 headshots will be fatal - but watch out for parasites! While playing as other characters, Mayhem mode is desirable to leave for bosses or especially difficult situations, as Leon, you can use it more freely and arbitrarily.

Luis

Luis

Luis is unlocked after reaching rank A or higher on any map as Leon. As someone who relies more on his wits than his weapons, Luis is a fairly complex hero that can prove useful. This is the weakest melee character due to slow melee attacks and basic knife, but excels at long range. The lack of safe sniping positions on most maps means he will have to be constantly on the move to survive.

If you get sucked into close combat, use Perfect Parry to stagger your enemies. Luis has a slow but powerful sweeping attack that comes in handy in moments when there are a lot of enemies around him. Use it as often as possible in situations where the hero is cornered. This is a key point to pay attention to when playing for him.

Starting inventory:

  • Pistol Red9
  • 40 pistol rounds
  • Rifle M1903
  • Biosensor sight
  • 14 rifle rounds
  • flash grenade
  • Pocket knife
  • 2 first aid sprays
The Red9 hits hard, but its slow fire and reload speeds, combined with limited ammo, will see Luis cornered a lot. Always aim for weak spots and melee attacks to get out of such situations.

The M1903 has been completely redesigned and even features a bio-sensor sight, making it easier for you to find targets. Whenever you shoot with a sniper rifle, don't forget to look back after a few shots - enemies can sneak up behind you!

Save your stun grenade for emergencies until you find an extra one; Luis has the hardest time dealing with bosses, so you might need her to avoid the chainsaw guy.

Mayhem Mode

When Luis enters Mayhem mode, he drops a bunch of dynamite, which explodes after a few seconds. Once this happens, you can manually place another one while this mode is still active. With a full gauge of Mayhem, you will have time to plant about three explosives.

This is Luis' primary means of taking out numerous enemy squads, as he doesn't have a shotgun or submachine gun. Find a more or less safe place, ideally with an easily accessible exit, and hold out there for as long as you can. When things get bad, enter Mayhem mode and run. Keep planting bombs to kill the pursuers until you reach the next position and then repeat the process.

Krauser

Jack Crowser is unlocked by earning an A rank or higher on any map while playing as Louis. As you would expect after going through the main story, Krauser is focused on close combat. He can create ridiculous combos by simply standing in the middle of the arena and cutting through all the opponents surrounding him. His tactical gear allows him to use the environment to his advantage.

Krauser

Starting inventory:
  • Combination Bow EJF-338
  • 4 explosive arrows
  • Submachine gun TMP
  • 60 submachine gun rounds
  • Combat knife
  • First Aid Spray
  • 8 stun grenades
Among the entire arsenal, Krauser's combat knife stands out; unlike the main game, it never breaks, allowing you to use it for as long as you wish. You can even parry with a chainsaw!

The animation of Krauser's knife is very different from Leon's animation of hits with the same weapon. Attack with a knife in the same way as in a normal game, and Krauser will be able to hit several opponents at once with quick blows.

The combo bow has limited ammo, but you can find some extra arrows. There are few of them, so it is best to save the bow for bosses. Explosive arrows knock down elite enemies, allowing you to get in close and attack with a knife before the enemy has a chance to get up.

The TMP does not have a stock, so it is very difficult to shoot accurately with this weapon. The best use for the submachine gun is to blow up red barrels, so be careful not to get hung up on picking up too many ammo for the submachine gun. Otherwise, you will litter your inventory!

Mayhem Mode

Upon entering Mayhem mode, Krauser takes on the mutated form he was in when you fought him at the end of chapter fourteen. He can't run or use ranged weapons (including grenades), but the blades on his arms deal massive damage. He also gains access to a charged attack that quickly depletes the Mayhem bar but deals even more damage.

Unlike other characters' Mayhem mode, Krauser's ability is best suited for taking out multiple enemy groups. You will be able to kill thugs without any problems, but it makes the character open to attack with a chainsaw and so on.

Hunk

Hunk

Hunk, an enigmatic member of Umbrella's elite security unit, is unlocked by earning an A rank or higher on any map as Krauser. Has a limited arsenal, but his melee attacks instantly kill any enemy, including bosses! However, this is a slow attack that has no area of effect compared to Leon's Roundhouse Kick, so don't rely on it too often.

Starting inventory:

  • Submachine gun LE-5
  • 220 submachine gun rounds
  • Pocket knife
  • 8 hand grenades
  • First Aid Spray
Hunk's only firearm, the LE-5 submachine gun, deals good damage at close to medium range. A quick burst of three bullets will kill most standard mobs and can stun bosses, allowing for a lethal melee attack. However, the reload time leaves a lot to be desired, and Hank's knife won't survive many parries, so if you're in a tight spot, throw a grenade and look for a better position.

Mayhem Mode

Hunk's Mayhem mode allows him to fire a lot of bullets. While active, Hank's submachine gun never runs out of ammo and does not need to be reloaded. This is a great way to quickly take out a lot of enemies or focus fire on a single boss.
