TOP 10: THE HOTTEST VIDEO GAME CROSSOVERS

Crossovers in video games have not only existed since the hype of service games. The whole series are based on mixing figures and elements from different brands. A smart tactic, as the developers grab fans of several franchises at once. We dug through all the collaborations from the past few years for you and have selected ten tracks that are particularly epic or memorable.

TOP 10: THE HOTTEST VIDEO GAME CROSSOVERS

10th place: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

The feud between the Nintendo figurehead and Sega mascot in the '90s was more legendary than the feud between Pepsi and Coke. In 2007, the two finally had enough and buried the hatchet – at least somehow. Because of course, the brawlers don't miss the opportunity to measure their strength in numerous Olympic disciplines. Whether it's the high jump, long jump, relay races, or gymnastics, all the variety doesn't let us overlook the one factor that turned our world upside down: this epic crossover brought together the two greatest competitors in the video game scene.

9th place: Dead Cells and Castlevania

This encounter was so close that it almost hurts. Finally, the roguelike Metroidvania Dead Cells builds on the foundation Castlevania laid many years ago. The environments, weapons, and characters from the legendary Konami series don't look like foreign bodies, rather they fit perfectly into the indie hit. With whips, axes, and holy water you fight your way to Dracula and then knock the vampire lord back into the coffin. Music roars through your ear canals, for which a whopping 51 tracks from Castlevania history have been re-recorded. A stake in the middle of the retro heart.

8th place: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

The pitch in Sony's company elevator was probably quite short: "Super Smash Bros. is digging our waters out, let's make a clone with the most popular PlayStation characters!" We even need the gameplay due to the proximity to Nintendo's template don't go into too much. The fighter constellations, on the other hand, provided wet fan dreams. Nathan Drake, PaRappa, Sackboy, and Sir Daniel Fortesque are among the less spectacular match-ups. On the other hand, when Big Daddy, Raiden, Kratos, and Heihachi fight their way through Metropolis, player hearts beat at an alarming rate.

7th place: Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Co.

Fighting games have been pitting characters from different brands against each other for many years. In The King of Fighters, the stars from the SNK universe have been fighting for almost three decades. Marvel vs. Capcom pitted Ryu, Chun-Li, and company against Captain America, Spider-Man, and company. Street Fighter X Tekken pitted the street fighters against Kazuya, Heihachi, and the rest of the Tekken crew. In contrast, Mortal Kombat packed horror icons like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger into the fray as DLCs, where they took on RoboCop, the Terminator, and even Rambo! Soul Calibur should not be forgotten: Yoda, Darth Vader, Geralt von Rivia, and even Link crossed swords here.

6th place: Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate

Koei Tecmo certainly has no shortage of brands. The Japanese publisher also appears to be leasing the Musou monopoly. An obvious decision, then, to throw the ultimate mass brawler onto the market. Typical of the genre, you send thousands and thousands of enemies into the eternal hunting grounds, and the sheer number of figures from various Koei series makes Warriors Orochi really exciting. Over 170 whipping boys and ladies are part of the party. Of course, various characters from Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors are not missing, but this is where the fun starts. Ryu and Ayane from Ninja Gaiden, Momiji and Rachel from Dead or Alive, Joan of Arc from Bladestorm and so many more. The one and only Musou mashup!

5th place: Rainbow Six Siege

Since December 2015, Ubisoft's shooter has been successfully fighting its way through the tough genre landscape. Any fan of online gaming knows that while new maps, operators, and weapons are important to fan spirits, one thing has a much greater impact: crossover events with associated skins. Here Rainbow Six Siege offered some collaborations that were often unexpected. Collaborations with other Ubisoft brands like Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed, and Ghost Recon? gift. Tomb Raider was the first non-corporate brand to venture into the game with a Lara Croft skin for Ash, and it just kept growing from there. The most exciting crossover partners in fast forward: Money Heist, Resident Evil, Yakuza, Rick & Morty, and Gris.

4th place: Monster Hunter and The Witcher

It just made so much sense that Geralt of Rivia would find his way into Monster Hunter: World. Based on his job description alone, witchers are responsible for cleaning the world of monsters. In the Ancient Forest, he actively supports the monster hunters, here the forest sprite is up to mischief. Use your witcher senses to track down the evil beast and then face it with Geralt's trusty silver sword. The mechanics of the special solo quest stand out so much from the Monster Hunter experience that we even forgot briefly not to play The Witcher 3. Upon successful completion, special weapons and armor beckon. Just the Nekker outfit for the cute Palicos, that didn't have to be...

3rd place: Kingdom Hearts

The main character of the notorious role-playing game series, together with his keyblade, may actually be the developers' own creation. Looking at the rest of the games, your skull will be spinning after a few minutes, not only because of the strange arrangement and chronology of the titles in the series. Sora and his companions Goofy and Donald Duck visit different Disney worlds and fight with Baymax, Leon, Yuffie, Sephiroth, and other Final Fantasy and Disney villains. This insane mix is enclosed in a branching, opaque story that requires a doctorate to understand.

2nd place: Super Smash. Bros. Ultimate

A whopping 82 fighters are constantly beating each other up in Nintendo's All-Stars fun. Of course, you will meet loads of Nintendo warriors, but overall there are more licenses than with the MI-6. In addition to the perfectly polished gameplay, this is also where the thrill of the brawl comes from. Where else would Mario, Bayonetta, Mega Man, Kazuya, Joker, Sephiroth, Minecraft-Steve, and many more kick their asses? Naturally, having such a large bunch of characters also means lots of movesets for you to learn and perfect. When it comes to long-term motivation, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate may not come close to an MMORPG, but the purchase will definitely ensure night-long parties for the next few years.
