CoD Modern Warfare 3 How to play split screen and local co-op?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is now available worldwide and, as such, many players will surely ask themselves a very common question with each new installment of Activision's veteran FPS saga: can this game be played in split screen? with a friend? Next, in this entry of our guide, we are going to reveal to you if it is possible to play in a local cooperative with a split screen so that you clear up any doubts.

How to play split screen locally?

As has already happened in the previous installment of the Call of Duty series, CoD Modern Warfare 3 (2023) has split-screen gaming options in local mode since its launch day. Of course, it is important to mention that this function is only available in the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S console versions of the game, and not in the PC version.

On the other hand, it is also worth noting that Modern Warfare 3 has a split screen exclusively for its multiplayer modes, but it is not allowed for its campaign missions which can only be enjoyed individually.

How to set up split screen?

To start playing split screen in Modern Warfare 3 (2023) you just have to follow these steps :

  • Enter any of the main menus of CoD Modern Warfare 3 (such as mode selection).
  • Look for the text "Add a controller or keyboard and mouse for split screen" near the top right of the screen.
  • If this is the case, connect a second compatible controller (this can be a controller or even a keyboard and mouse) to the console.
  • When this second device is connected, the previous text will have changed and will now read "Player 2, press X/A to join split screen".
  • Therefore, now press the "X" (PS) or "A" (Xbox) button to join the second player to the game.
If this goes well, which it should, the option to connect a second profile to the console will immediately appear, which is the one the second player will use for the current session. Then connect one more profile, but preferably not a guest one if you are going to want to play in multiplayer modes (that is, an account connected to PSN on Sony consoles or an account connected to Microsoft on Xbox consoles).

Finally, it is worth mentioning that if both players want to play online multiplayer modes, both user accounts must have an active subscription to the PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold services. If you just want to play offline private games you can do so without needing a subscription.

And that's it, there is no need to take into account any additional steps. After the second player has joined the current party, you can move on to the multiplayer modes of your choice to enjoy split-screen local co-op games. Each player will have their own settings and preferences, so... enjoy!
