How to Transfer Starfield Saves from Steam to Xbox Game Pass (Microsoft Store)

Some gamers are encountering difficulties when transferring Starfield saves from Steam to Xbox Game Pass on PC. This is due to the platforms using different file extensions. But you can use the effective method that we described in this guide.

Where are Starfield save files on PC?

Starfield save files may be located in different directories depending on the digital store from which you install the application.

General directory of Starfield saves

Follow the path:

  • "C:/Users/USERNAME/OneDrive/Documents/My Games/Starfield/Saves"

Note: The "OneDrive" directory in the path is common for Windows 11 users. If you don't have it, just skip it.

Xbox Game Pass Save Catalog (Microsoft Store)

To find save files in the Microsoft Store, follow this path:

  • "C:/Users/USERNAME/AppData/Local/Packages/BethesdaSoftworks.ProjectGold_3275kfvn8vcwc/SystemAppData/wgs/00901xxxxxxxxxx"

How to Transfer Save Files from Share or Steam to Xbox Game Pass

If you are going to transfer save files from a shared save directory, for example, Steam to Xbox Game Pass, you will encounter difficulties: the file extensions are completely different, so playing on another launcher simply will not see your saves.

However, fans have already created a small program that can automatically convert Starfield save files from Steam to the Microsoft Store version on PC. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Close the game and make sure the starfield.exe process is completed.
  • Make a backup of your saves.
  • Download this program, but do not open it after downloading.
  • Go to your save file directory and try to open any file with a .SFS extension.
  • Select the downloaded . EXE file as the program.
  • Wait for the operation to complete and close the window.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary with other saves.
When the process is complete, the message “Press any key to continue” will appear at the bottom of the window . If the process fails, you will see the message “Error” . Most often, this happens when the space on the system disk runs out, since from one small file of no more than 10 MB in size, an entire directory of files is created, the size of which can exceed 400 MB.

Be sure to make sure that you have created a backup of your original saves, because this is an experimental program and its creator himself warns about this. However, this method helped us, so we share it with you.

It also happens that after selecting an .EXE file as a program to open .SFS files, nothing happens. To solve the problem, just rename the downloaded .EXE file.

What else do you need to know:

  • The game must be closed during conversion, otherwise, you may encounter problems when creating new saves;
  • Transferred quick and automatic saves will be in the list below the already created ones;
  • After converting your saves, you will see your saves in the Xbox Game Pass version of Starfield. When you select a save, you will also receive a banner saying “This save relies on content that no longer exists. Some items may no longer be available. Continue downloading? . Click "Yes" and continue playing.
