Ubisoft caught using AI-generated art amid a string of layoffs

How artificial intelligence could impact the future employment of graphic designers and artists remains a hotly debated topic. It gets especially tense when it's not just individuals tinkering with Dall-E, but mega-corporations resorting to this technology of questionable morality (and even more questionable quality) through massive job cuts, like Disney and now Ubisoft.

Although AI image and illustration technology has come a long way, with algorithms studying and copying thousands of images online, it is very easy to identify AI-generated art. This is exactly what happened with Ubisoft, which posted Halloween-themed images of Assassin's Creed on two of its local accounts (Ubisoft LATAM and Ubisoft Nederland) in honor of the upcoming holiday. Fans who saw the AI images were quick to pounce on them, criticizing the company for resorting to such cheap resources when it has designers on staff... especially in a year that has seen so many layoffs.

A month ago, it was reported that six employees from Ubisoft's networking and communications department (including Ubisoft Spain) were fired in order to "move to a more centralized and efficient model." First it was the Ubisoft account Latam, which published an illustration of Ezio Auditore created by Midjourney.

In this tweet they admitted that the image was taken from #IA, but later removed it, possibly due to flaws such as the character in the lower right corner with a minisaw.....or the strange figure in the lower right that looks like a horseman merged with your horse.

The Ubisoft Nederland account then posted the Halloween artwork, which has never been removed, at least to this point.

However, fans were very critical of Ubisoft's behavior. What's even more interesting is that this was the account of Ubisoft Netherlands, whose offices were closed earlier this year (along with Ubisoft Spain, Italy, Poland and Nordic countries), resulting in 60 layoffs.
