Pokémon S&V The Indigo Disc: how to evolve Inkay into Malamar

The Indigo Disc brings back a great classic, namely the evolution of Inkay into Malamar. Here's how it works in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Inkay originally appeared in Pokémon Y, or in the era of chapters for 3DS. It had one of the most unusual evolution methods, and we haven't had to evolve Inkay into Malamar since the Nintendo Switch came out.

If you're having trouble evolving your Inkay, here's what you need to do to do so in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet DLC: The Indigo Disc.

THE INDIGO DISC: WHERE TO FIND INKAY

If you want Malamar, you must first capture an Inkay. These can only be caught in the Bioterarium of the Blueberry Institute and are quite common. We found them in abundance throughout the Coast Sector, but they can be found in other locations as well. There is no specific location for spawning: they can be found practically anywhere there is water.

This method is similar to that of the 3DS, but is significantly more complicated on the Switch in The Indigo Disc. First, you need to make sure your Switch is in portable mode, as it won't work if your console is connected to your TV. Secondly, make sure you have disconnected all other Joy-Cons and controllers from the console. The only controllers that need to be connected are the Joy-Cons connected to the console for it to work.

Inkay evolves through leveling up, which can be obtained with experience candies or with the classic level-up. We recommend using candy, as this is a rather difficult process. Your Switch must be turned upside down for the duration of the evolution process - this means you have to turn it upside down before giving the candy to Inkay and keep it upside down until the evolution.

If using experience from the fight, Switch must be flipped before Inkay gains experience and must remain flipped for the remainder of the fight until evolving. If it doesn't work on the first try, it's because the Switch's gyroscope can be a little difficult to handle, and you may need to try again to find the right angle.
