The technique for finding it is simple: just dig in areas where you can find clay naturally. Of course, you may also come across dirt, pebbles, or gold coins depending on where you are, but you should be able to find enough clay to fulfill your objectives by digging this way. To go faster, you can hold down A, E, Y, or SQUARE to continuously dig in a straight line.

However, if you really want to maximize your winnings, you will need to find a companion to help you. To do this, increase your friendship to level 2 with any character, and assign them the Excavation role. Then, ask him to go for a walk, and start digging in the indicated places.

Thanks to his role, your friend will be able to give you extra clay. Depending on your level of friendship with the character in question, he will give you additional resources more or less frequently. The ideal is to dig with a level 10 companion, as they will offer you extra clay almost every time, reducing your excavation time by half.

And if you want to speed up the process further, you can also place furniture over the holes you've dug to automatically fill them and force the clay to reappear! You'll need to exit decorating mode for the holes to fill up, so make sure you cover all the holes at once so you don't have to repeat the process.
