No Man's Sky: Types of weather, storms and their effects

Discover the types of climates in No Man's Sky with the Origins update. From fire and lightning storms to tornadoes and meteor showers, each causes different effects.

The No Man's Sky Origins update has added new climatic and atmospheric events to the game that we can find on the planets and that are most impressive. Additionally, each of these weathers has its own effects that disrupt gameplay. Below we tell you all the ones that exist and how to find them.

Types of weather and storms

Types of weather and storms

Mainly the planets in No Man's Sky can have one of these climates :

  • Heat: shields are activated above 60º.
  • Cold: shields are activated below -20º.
  • Radioactive: Shields activate above 4 radiation points.
  • Toxic: Shields activate above 40 points of toxicity.
A planet's climate type can be found by scanning the planet from space or by landing on it. Within these climates, there is a huge variety of biomes, which influence and determine the general environmental danger of a planet, as well as the wealth of animals and fauna.

How to find storms and weather events

The Origins update has included spectacular weather events such as lightning storms in the game. These types of events are activated randomly and, therefore, can be found depending on the climate and biome that a planet has (obviously those with the most extreme conditions will be more likely to produce storms).

We may encounter the following storms and weather events:

  • Shooting stars: They occur randomly on many planets and fly across the sky.
  • Strange gravitational events: strange changes can sometimes happen on anomalous planets that allow you to fly over the atmosphere with the jetpack through a low-gravity environment.
  • Meteor shower: they fly over, falling from the atmosphere and can impact near your position, stay away to avoid damage.
  • Lightning and lightning: can strike during thunderstorms.
  • Firestorms: Some worlds with extreme temperatures may experience this event where the planet's surface bursts into flames.
  • Tornadoes: There is a rare chance of dangerous spiraling tornadoes during storms.

Advantages of storms

Although it may seem otherwise, weather events such as storms generate beneficial effects that you can take advantage of. That is to say, there are advantages to the Exosuit and the Multi-Tool when there are storms on a planet:

  • In extreme storm conditions: Superheated temperatures can be processed to have better jetpack efficiency.
  • In radioactivity storms: you will extract a greater amount of additional matter with the multitool.
  • In toxic storms: You can accelerate even further in the jetpack with the help of gas-processing technology.
  • In cold blizzards: You will be able to extract minerals with the multi-tool for longer without overheating.
  • Dense toxic gases: can be recirculated for additional strength.

Find volcanoes and marshes

Origins has also added to No Man's Sky the possibility of encountering huge volcanoes and mysterious marshes. Specifically, volcanoes can be found on burned planets and there is a probability that they are active, generating burning lava. On the other hand, swamps and marshes full of luminous mushrooms, incredible fauna, and thick fog form on fertile planets.
