If you're playing on hard difficulty, you'll have to look for canvas in the open world. At the top of the hill, which is not far from the coast, there are camps of the natives. You can often find tarps in their tents. With this resource, you can build a primitive tent. To do this, also look for two sticks in the forest.

Open inventory and select tarp. It is located in the upper right corner. Place it in any open area.
