In Sons of the Forest, if you want to save the game or your character needs to sleep, then you need a place to stay. The simplest form of this is a tent, which you can build very quickly. In this guide, we explain how you can do that.

To build a simple tent, you need two materials: a tarp and a stick. You can collect a tarp at the beginning of the crash site and sticks can be found everywhere. You can also task your companion Kelvin to search for a stick if you don't feel like searching yourself.

If you have the two materials, you must first open your inventory and get out the tarp there.
Then spread the tarpaulin out on the ground where you want your tent to be.
Then go to a corner of the tarp and a dashed arrow will appear pointing up.
Interact with it with the left mouse button (or RT/R2 on the controller) and your character will automatically place a stick if you have one in inventory.

The dashed arrow indicates that you can place a stick here.

You can also modify your tent a bit by lifting other corners of the tarpaulin with sticks. However, this is not necessary for the functionality. Now when you approach your tent, the keyboard shortcuts for sleeping and saving will appear. Instructions for building a tent can also be found in your manual.

Dismantle the tent and take the tarpaulin with you

An important tip for the beginning: After saving or sleeping, dismantle the tent and take the tarpaulin with you. As long as you have a tarp in your inventory, you can always easily provide accommodation. To disassemble the tent, you must stand next to the tarpaulin and hold down the "C" button (X/square on the controller). This should be the default key binding. Otherwise, look in the settings to see which key is responsible for the "Disassemble" command.

Hold "C" next to the tarp to disassemble the tent and take the tarp with you.
